The following information is extracted from McDonald Poe's book, Biographical Studies of Samuel Poe of Essex: After Samuel's death the Poe boys took over the tobacco farm. However, when Essex County was incorporated by Caroline County, the Lee family who had great influence in the Caroline County government, caused constant problems for the small planters. It is assumed that the Poe's were disgusted and dissatisfied with the tobacco law enforcement and disheartened with their farm operations and the general situation in Caroline County.

Samuel Poe of Essex County, VA (active c.1704 – 1725)
In regard to Samuel Poe’s existence in Virginia by 1704, this is all we know any degree of certainty:
1) Quit Rent Rolls of Essex County Virginia for year 1704, Volume 33, page 359, lists Samuel Poe with 800 acres of land.

2) At Tappahannock, Essex County, Virginia, the Probate Court records, with other records including the Essex County Archives Records at Richmond, Virginia establish that Samuel Poe died August 17, 1725 and the will was probated and administered in Essex County, Virginia with Frances Browning named executor and the record title changed to the widow Mary. The entire estate was situated in Essex, County, Virginia, including the 905 acres of land on Pumensend Swamp. The children's given names were not stated in his will. Samuel Poe was referred to as a planter (farmer). Taken from McDonald Poe’s research

3) McDonald Poe, on page 32, states that at a deceased artisan's estate sale in Essex, County, Virginia in 1704, someone is referred to in The record of the sale as “Captain Paw.” This man purchased the artisan's tools and equipment. The sale price of the equipment and tools exceeded four pounds sterling. This detail could be significant (see below). All subsequent information supports the fact that Samuel Poe was in Virginia from 1704 until his death in 1725, but tells us nothing of his birth date or place of origin. We can probably assume with some safety that as a Virginia settler with legal rights, he was from England, or descended from an earlier colonist. We don’t know which at this point. After 1704, Samuel documentary evidence shows him participating in land acquisitions and sales. He appears to have entered into disputes with the landed gentry class over tobacco growing rights. None of Samuel’s children are mentioned in his will, but its wording implies that he did have children. The names of Samuel’s children have been inferred from the name of the executor of his will, and from court cases, and transfer deeds, powers of attorney, etc. Much of this information was compiled by McDonald poe. 1 of Samuel’s daughters who married a Mr. Browning. We don’t know her first name. The daughters appear to Be Mrs.John Collins, Mrs. John Sutton and perhaps, Mrs. Frances Browning (Frances Browning was the executorof Samuel’s will. Other sources have the daughter married to Robert Browning. One daughter may have been named Mary, who married a Mr.Collins. Samuel’s sons appear to include the following: Samuel Poe, William Poe,Robert Poe, John Poe, Simon Poe, Benjamin Poe and Marson Poe
McDonald Poe’s statement in the introduction to his book that Samuel and Mary were born “about 1675” he provides no evidence for this statement.
Samuel departed England for Virginia, he provides no evidence. Samuel Poe at least descends from one of the Poe families of central England. But we cannot state this as a fact. We do not know if Samuel Poe was born in the Virginia colony or came from Britain directly. We have no information about Mary, his wife.
