He was an engineer, inventor. With his father in 1854, Babcock invented the first polychromatic printing press and a commercially successful job printing press. While employed at Hope Irons Works, Providenc, R.I., he and Stephen Wilcox invented and brought ut the Babcock & Wilcox Steam engine, an early automatic cut-off engine of excellent design. The two inventors formed a partnership and secured a patent in 1867 for a water tube high pressure boiler; in 1868 they moved to NY to manufacture the boiler; in 1881 the highly sucessful firm was incorporated with Babcock as President.
