SEVENTH GENERATION


1577. David Sherman Babcock (1) was born on Aug 12 1822 in Stonington, Conn. He died on Aug 24 1885 in Stonington, Conn. David was killed by a moving car while crossing the railroad at Stonington Borough Conn. on a dark evening. Capt Babcock at an early age manifested a desire for a seafaring life, and made his first voyage when 16 years of age. At the
age of 25 he commanded a ship on a voyage to Lima Peru. He made many fast
and famous voyages and cruised all over the world, engaging more especially in China and European trade. he commanded for several years the famious clipper ship Young America in which he sailed 3 times around the world , his wife accompanying him. At the breaking out of the Civil War he was offered a position onthe staff of Brig-Gen Silas Casey, and also the Lieut. - Colonelcy of the Naval Brigade forming in New York, but he declined both offers , believing he could be of more service to his country in his original profession than in a new and untried one. He entered the service at the first of the war, and continued to the end, commanding a number of different ships , including the Illinois, which was fitted up with an iron prow and send to Hampton roads to watch for the expected Merrimac, which never came out but once and then returned to Norfolk and was blown up by her friends. At one time he received a letter of thanks from Admiral Dupont for his exhibition of the skill and seamanship.
In 1879 he held the office of President of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.
At the time of his death he was President of the Stonington and Providence line of steamers, and Vice-President and General Manager of the New York, Providence and Boston R.R.

He was married to Charlotta A. Noyes on May 28 1850 in Brooklyn, PA. Charlotta A. Noyes (1) was born on Apr 3 1826 in Stonington, Conn. David Sherman Babcock and Charlotta A. Noyes had the following children:
