The John & Mary Burroughs' of Whatley Alabama

About Our Family Research

In Whatley there is a small place called INDIAN RIDGE. We are not sure how the name originated. There are records which shows that at one time there were two indian tribes dwelling in the surrounding areas.
The road running along the north-south main crest, between the Alabama River on the east and the Bassett Creek on the west, is known as the Old Line Road. This road was known as the dividing line between the two tribes--the Creeks and the Choctaws.
It is assumed that the crest was called Ridge and because of its association with the indians, the name Indian Ridge came about.
Cecil Burroughs and his children attended a Burroughs reunion in Selma, Alabama in 1982. From this gathering of family, Cecil and Beatrice's children agreed to start a West-Burroughs Family Reunion. The third week-end in June, 1984, the first West-Burroughs Reunion was held in San Antonio, Texas and has shown a steady increase in family members and attendance. There are ministers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, professional baseball players, business associates, politicians and down-home folks that make up this wonderful family. We thank God for each and every one of our family members.
