Blacksmith on Gilchrist Farm north of the T road (at one time) - Wenrich's record

The St. Thomas United Church of Christ on Pennsylvania Route 39 (Linglestown Road), east of Linglestown, PA and opposite Wenrich Street is herein referred to as Wenrich's. In the adjoining cemetery there is a stone which marks:
" Second place of Worship Log Church 1794-1856"
Donated by Frank A. Wenrich.
A stone in front of the church marks:
"Wenrich's Church
Third Place of Worship
Built 1856 - Rebuilt 1892
Ground Donated 1792
by Francis Wenrich"
Erected by Wenrich Family Association of America

Wenrich's Reformed Church Homecoming pamphlet dated November 13, 1949 lists Botteiger as a family name found on the old tombstones (1200 buried here) and in records of the church. A copy of this pamphlet is in the author's files.

Gravesite is 405 found by the author 17 August 1986. Gravestone was cut by J. H. Fadden, reads: "In Memory of Jacob POTTIGER (sic), Born June 20, 1811, Died Nov 3,1853, Aged 42 years 4 months and14 days and an inscription in German which reads: "Lasset ab ihr meine liebe/ Lasset ab von traurig keit/ Was wollt ihr auch noch betreiben/ Weil ihr doch versigert seid/ Dass ich alte qual und noth/ Ueber wunden und by Gott/ Mit den auseruhoelten schuebe/ Voller freud und ewig lebe" Translated as: "Let go my love/ Let go your sorrow/ What do you want to accomplish/ You can be assured that/ I have overcome my pain/ And worries and with/ God's guidance/ Have happinesss and eternal life"

Living in Fishing Creek Valley, Middle Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., PA
On page 623 of the 1860 census for Susquehanna Twp., Dauphin Co., PA, 1138/1142, Albert is listed as 22 and a farmer, Catharine is listed as 23. There is a son Henry, 9/12, living with them. His mother Elizabeth is listed as 50 (a widow at
this time), and brothers are listed: Daniel, 17 a farmers apprentice; Thomas 15; George 14; James 11; Levi 10; and, William 8. This is my Thomas who was probably born in 1844/45. If William was taken to an orphanage in Ohio, it had to be
after circa 28 June 1860, the date of the Census. Indeed it seems likely that James and William were taken to an orphanage in OH after the 1860 Census; shows them living in OH. Levi shows on the 1880 census as living in PA!

  Notes for THOMAS G. POTTEIGER:
The death certificate I have is for another Thomas Potticher who married Emma Drummond, both of New Buffalo Borough, Pennsylvania 8/20/1871. They were married by Joseph Wait, J. P.. Witness was H. N. Wells. I entered a new family card for this family which I have not been able to link to.

On 28 March 1868 Thomas was living near Tiffin Post Office, OH according to Mary Potteiger Bequest Awarded document on file at the Dauphin County Courthouse. Death of his grandmother may have brought him back to Dauphin Co., PA. In 1880 Soundex he is listed as 30 years of age which would put his birthdate Circa 1850; he is listed with Emma 28, Agnes 10, George 8, and Carrie 6 and they are living in West Hanover Twp., Dauphin Co., PA. The 1870 Census lists a Thomas 23 and Emma 19 living in Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin Co., PA; which Thomas and Emma are they? In 1860, Thomas 15 is living with his brother Albert, et. al. and mother in Susquehanna Twp., Dauphin Co., PA. Did he get younger as he grew older?

  More About THOMAS G. POTTEIGER:
Burial: December 01, 1918, Willow Grove Cemetery, Linglestown, Dauphin Co., PA
Occupation: Farmer, Sawmill Laborer, Stone Mason

Notes for EMMA E. (S.) PERKEY:
Emma Perkey is taken from the death certificate for her son George W. Potteigher (sic), information was supplied by his wife Mary Elizabeth Shoemaker Potteigher (sic).

1900 census data indicate she had five children, 1910 indicates she had four children.

I am only guessing that she is buried in Willow Grove; I know her husband is, but I do not know where in the cemetery - there is no marker and the cemetery did not start keeping records until 1947! Disposition of her husbands property (Thomas Potteiger Heirs -to- Harvey M. Hess) notes as one debt: "digging grave for burial of Mrs. Thomas Potteiger $6.00". It does not say where or when the grave was dug. This document was recorded 28 June 1919; Thomas died 29 Nov 1918. This document begins: "Whereas Thomas Potteiger sometimes written Thomas G Potteiger late of West Hanover Township Dauphin County Pennsylvania departed this life on the 29th day of November 1918 leaving to survive him the following children to wit:..." There is no mention of a wife other than the digging of the grave - Emma probably preceeded him in death, and he may have died shortly thereafter before he could pay for the digging of her grave! His son George Washington Potteiger died Jan 17, 1919; he and his unmarried children are buried in Willow Grove Cemetery and their graves are marked by gravestones.

Ancestors and Perkey relations provided by Preston Russel Perkey, Jr. in a chart dated 5/98 and stating that Charles made this (his cousin?).

  Notes for GEORGE D. POTTEIGER:
The 1850 census lists Thomas G. and George D., later 1870 and 1880 census data list Levi as born in 1852. Levi and William are referred to in . lists only a George. The 1860 census data show George living with his older brother Albert and
his wife,, pg 78. Listing of children is one too many according to.

Company B, 201 Regiment, Private Infantry Civil War. This is on tombstone. This should be examined to determine if his parents names are listed somewhere.
