house below the McIntruff home of today was once the dwelling of the
Rev. John Hughes. He had two sons, Eaton and Dick, and two daughters,
Annie and Mattie, who married a Mr. Rader. THE HUGHES FAMILY,
James H. Hughes. Died, 18 Feb 1867. He was born in Wales but was
educated in the best schools in England. He came to America and made
his home in Lynchburg, VA. He was a first cousin of William Henry
Harrison, former president of the United States. He died during the
tough times following the civil war.
He married Martha Roberts. Born in North Carolina. Died, 6 Dec
1875. Her parents came from Ireland and they owned slaves. These
slaves were traded for their farm in East Tennessee. Only Child: John
R. Hughs.
SECOND GENERATION
John R. Hughs Born, 7 May 1839. Died, 13 May 1886. Burial in Oak
Grove. Occupation: Rev. As a young boy he became a soldier and lost

He married Susanna M. Scarborough, daughter of J. L. Scarborough
and Francis Scarborough, 12 Nov 1867. Born, 12 May 1845.
The anti-liquor "Crusaders" camp was located on E. Summer St.,
in
1874. Members of the anti-liquor forces gathered at the old saloon
building to work against the forces of alcohol. Mrs. John R. Hughes
was a member of this group.
Children: Martha Francis Hughes, Richard Lincoln Hughes, James
Lupton Eaton Hughes. Born, 2 Sep 1867. Died, 24 May 1914. He married
Sallie R. Carter, 4 Jul 1886.
Anna Carolin Hughes. Born, 26 Apr 1870. Stephen Merrill Hughes.
Born, 7 Oct 1877. Died, 1886 (??). Burial in Oak Grove.
THIRD GENERATION 1. Martha Francis Hughes (John R., 2). Born, 5 May
1863, in Baileyton. Died, 3 Mar 1923, in Lynnhurst Cem, Knox, Tn.
She married Rheuben H. Rader, son of Henry Rader and Mary Ann
"pollyan" Bowers, 4 Nov 1886, in Green County, Tn. Born, 27 Oct 1856,
in Dulaney, Greene, Tn. Died, 19 Jan 1932, in Knox, Tn. Burial in
Lynnhurst Cem.
2. Richard Lincoln Hughes (John R., 2). Born, 28 Aug 1865.
Children: Annie Sue Hughes. Born, 4 Sep 1898. John Rufus Hughes.
Born, 24 Dec 1899. Richard Merrill Hughes. Born, 11 Feb 1904. He was married
to Susanna M. Scarborough on 12 Nov 1867. 19.
Susanna M. Scarborough was born on 12 May 1845. Live in Greeneville
Tennessee during her live was described in
