He grew up in Knoxville. His sister mildred says; "We rented a
house just before we moved into the two story, on the same street. I
was about in the first grade, not more than second grade. We lived on
Gibbs road until I was about 17 or 18 years old. The folks sold that
and they moved elsewhere in Knoxville. They lived there until dad went
to Seattle. In the mean time, I guess, that Glenn had taken off.
The High school was about a mile from where we lived. We went
into Fountain city and then went up the hill to the left. Aunt Lois
lived up near the school. She just lived down the hill and around the
hill from the school.
Kenneth Metcalf, his cousin, Remembers;" I knew Glenn as a high school
boy. The last time I saw him was about 1943, after I came back from
Air Force duty in Alaska. He visited him and his wife in Oxnard
California. Glen was a very upstanding upright type of guy. He was
what you would call a very nice young man.
I was younger than him. He was just as steady and nice of a kid
as you would ever want to see. Him and two or three guys got in a
Model-T ford and went to California. That was unfortunate about your
father glenn. Something must of been a forerunner to his drinking.
There must of been something in the way of disappointments. I knew
glenn real well in Knoxville. He was 2 or 3 years older than I was,
and that makes a lot of difference when you are young.
I was born in 1912. We lived in different parts of town and,, .
The area where they lived was a real nice part of Fountain City on
Gibbs Road. My earliest recollection of them as a kid was when they
lived in Lincoln Park which was a suburb of north Knoxville. Mildred
was older than glenn, and I remember mildred riding a bicycle and we
thought that was wonderful. Then they built this house out on Gibbs
Road, pretty nice house. He went to Central high school in Fountain
City north of Knoxville, Tenn. Thomas graduated in 1927 from Central
High. People called him "Lindy", some of them. He sort of looked
like Lindburg.
