224. Joel Matthew Valentine (21)(76) was born in 1740. Valentine ancestry
Howard G. Mc Neil, (4012 Harlanwood Drive, Ft. Worth, TX 76109) would
like to exchange information on the Valentines of Poughkeepsie,
Dutchess Co., NY who migrated there about 1750 from Hamstead, LI, NY.
There is a strong possibility that it could be Richard Valentine (58),
bc 1702, son of Richard Valentine (12) and Mary Pearsall, who
reportedly had nine sons and three daughters.
It appears Joel Valentine and his brothers, John and Richard
Valentine, Moved on to Nassau, Rensselaerwyck, Manor around 1785. The
"Vollentines" resided on property leased on land near Nassau called
Valties Kill.
Copies of leases are on record at Albany Co., NY, for Benjamin and
Richard Volentine. Benjamin’s lease oncluded 48 3/10 ths Acre; signed
7 Aug 1790. Joel Valentine’s brother, Richard Valentine leased some
property adjoining Benjamin Valentine’s land. Richard signed an
indenture for 126 acres of land controlled by Rennsselaerwyck Manor
on 28 Apr 1790. There is also reference to Richard Valentine in
Mortgage book 5, p116, Albany Court Clerk’s Office, dated 26 Apr 1784
in which Joseph Valentine and his wife, Catharine, of Charlotte
Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, mortgaged their linds in New Concord,
Albany County, NY for "267 good English guineas" to a Richard
Valentine of Hamstead, Queens Co., NY, confirming the beleif that the
family originated in Hampstead, NY.
There is a Joseph Valentine on the 1790 Census at Cambridge Town,
Albany Co., NY as having 2 m/over 16; 3 m/under 16 and 3 females.
The 1800 NY Fed Cen Index lists Joel, John and Rochard Valentine at
Rensselaer co., NY. In 1820, Richard Valentine (son of John) and Joel
Valentine were at Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY, and in 1830, Valentines
at Rensselaer Co., NY were: Daniel, Isaac Valentine, John, Millesea,
Sackett and Richard Valentine.
Philip Valentine, bc 1733, of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY, could
possibly be the father of Joel, Richard and John Valentine. There is
a Will for James Valentine, dated 26 Apr 1806, pr 19 June 1807,
Dutchess Co., NY wills, p 94, in which he mentions his brothers,
Philip and Richard Valentine.
It has been definitely established that Joel Valentine, bc 1763, of
Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY, had two known brothers; Richard
Valentine, bc 1757; d 1813 at Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY, and John
Valentine, b 28 Feb 1761; d 14 Apr 1813, at the same place.
