OSEPH JOSIAH BRABHAM,JR:

Mr. J. W. Brabham
Lowell, Ohio

If in making preperation to come this way you will allow about one half days visit to each Brabham in this State, that is making two visits in a day you would just make acquantanse of the family. We have a fine country now munch prettier, and perhaps a little better off than the time "General Sherman marched to the Sea". As to the history of the family you may have noticed that one of the chief divisions in Holland is the Dutchey Brabant. Now just from the sound of our name it is my idea that ours is of this same country. That is a dutch name.

This is an old province even having been called by its present name back during the time of Ceasar and later in Chartemange Reign.

So it is quite plansable that immegrants from the old country went to England and there began our ancestry.

In 1407 there was a battle between the army of King Henry IV and the rebellious Scott under Percus at a place called Bram(b)ham moor, this is now called Branemar. On the map of Scotland this town was a small village of less than ten thousand inhabitants it is situated in the North East part of Scotland, in the South East part of Aberdeen Shire. This I thank corrected our name and this is the habitation of our fore fathers.

But we find evidence also that the Brabham's lived in England. We note that Chambers Encyclopedia says that Joseph Brabham was born Yorkshire, England and was an inventor. also John Brabham born at London, England 1774 and died at Brompton in 1856 at the age of 72 years. He was a famous tenor singer having appeared at convent Gordon and Lane Theatres. Also Johnus Brabham born at Hamburg in 1833 was a great composer of note and was introduced by Shumann.

One of our fore father married a Scotch Lassie, this may be the Scotch side of the case.

It was my great great grandfather who came to America with his two brothers, one settled in Virginia and of his life you know the history. Another settled in South Carolina, Clarendon County, near the town of manning his decendants now live in that part of the country. Spelling his name Bradham. The other brother settled in lower Carolina in Barnwell County at what is comonly known as Bufords Bridge, this being a neighborhood and not a town.

This last is my great great grandfather his name or his sons name I do not know; that son had three sons (possably) Archibold, who's wife was Miss. Graham he later moved to Alabama where he reared a family. The next brother (name unknown) had two sons John M. and Hampton.

John M. Braham's children are as follows; Frank, Marion, Arthur W. and Lewis A. My great grandfather's name was Joseph Joniah Brabham, Sr. He married a Kirkland and his children are Susannah, Robert, Joseph Joniah, Jr. The last name being that of my grandfather. He married Susannah McMillian. He was a member of the secession convention in 1860 and was in two miles of his home that the first movement for the secession was held. He was for many years clerk of Barnwell County never having been defeated in his entire career. He died in 1880, his children are; H. J., Julia B., James, C. R. ( my father) Frank, Agnes died at 15 Hattie, Lizzie dead, and William M.

My father is a merchant and a farmer he married Mannie Manzo, who's father came direct from france. The children are as follows; Clarance, Robert, Vance, Wells, Agnes, McKay, Mabel M., William. Gladys dead, and Robert, is dead. My Mother died in 1895 and my father married again to Buena Vista Samuel they had two children, Buena Vista and Lois Evelyer.

You are doubtless tired of this subject; but a great subject requires munch space and a great name is not made in one generation. Trusting that Brabham's of the North and the South will meet some day and that we shall both work to make the name greater that it already is and that there will be no North or South in Brabham history.

I am yours most sincerly.

M. William Brabham
Banwell County, Bamberg, South Carolina

Notes for T
HOMAS BRABHAM,SR:

This information was compiled by Anna Brabham Osborne.

The states herin are given and cooected from the letters of M. William Brabham of Bamburg, South Carolina; and from documents prepared for the Brabham reunions; one held at Benedict, Nebraska, Sept. 1, 1908, and the other at the fram home of Thomas Jefferson Brabham near Eugene, Oregon, Nov. 26, 1908.

The Brabham family had its rise in the Duchy of Brabant in Central Europe in the time of Charlemagne. The original family name was Brabant. This Duchy still exits. The northern half is in Holland and is still called North Brabant. The southern half is in Belgium and is known as South Brabant. King Albert of Belgium is of this Duchy and of the original family of Brabant.
Members of the family migrated to England. There the name became Brabham. Chamber's Encylopedia mentions a Joseph Brabham who was an inventor. Also a John Brabham who was a famous tenor singer. He appeared in Convent Garden and Drury Lane Theaters (1774-1856). Also a Johnannus Brabham born in Hamburg Germany (1833). He was a composer of note and was introduced by Shumann.

Three Brabham brothers emigrated from England, landing in America, Sept. 1, 1783. One settled in Clarendon County, South Carolina. His descendents still live in this section and spell their name Bradham. Another settled in Barnvelle County. The South Carolina Brabham were strong seccessionists. One was a member of the Secession Convention 1860. He was also a member of the legislature durring the war and afterwards. He was the father of M. William Brabhm whose researches of the annals of the Brabham family is here used.

The third brother settled in Loudoun County, Virginia. He was a shoemaker. Early in eighteen hundred some of his descendants made their way to Washington County Virginia. From these have come the large Ohio branch of the family. if is this branch that has gathered in the reunions. At the Benedict, Nebraska reunion, the hammer with which the founder of the Virginia-Ohio branch of the family aplied his trade was presented to the youngest male representative of the Family. Thomas Jefferson Brabham, of Eugene, Oregon (on the birthday-celebration-reunion) was the father of twelve children. At the time of the reunion there were ten children living, thirty-six grand children and thirty-one great-grand Children. Seventy Brabham's all of them residing in Oregon were at the reunion.

The so-called pure- Virginia branch of the family are the descendanats of the son of the Brabham brother (shoemaker), who settled in Loudoun County Virginia, and carried on the family in that state. This son did not move into Ohio, but stayed in Virginian. Many of his descendants still live in Virginia. He was the grandfather of the compiler of these notes, Anna Brabham Osborne. His children were Jane (Mrs. Joseph Combs), Mary (Mrs. Richard Alexander), Sarah (Mrs. David Alexander) Thomas Jefferson (father of the compiler), Frances Marion, Violinda (mrs. James Moran).
