The birthday anniversary of Thomas J. Brabham and that of his daughter, Sarah J. Bell. which occurred November 22, was made the occasion of a joint reunion of the Brabham family units on Thanksgiving day, which was also the 125th anniversary of their progenitors celebrated on American soil. The affair was held at the home of T. J. Brabham, six miles northwest of Junction City. The Brabham forbears came from England and landed on American soil. September 22, 1783.
Thomas J. Brabham was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, on November 22, 1830. When seven years of age he moved to Washington, County, Ohio with his parents, where he resided untill December 25, 1850, when he married Miss Sarah McKenna, and to this union was born five children.. They are Mrs. Mary Carpenter. of Monroe, Oregon; John Brabham of Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. Sarah Bell of Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. Rosilla Graham of Junction City, Oregon; James Brabham of Eugene, Oregon.
On September 28, 1861 he enlisted in the union ary of the Civil War for three years and three months in Co. H., 77th Ohio Volunteer infantry. and took part in one of the bloodiest battles of the war, the battle of Shiloh, and several other battles and skirmishes, and while he was still in the army his wife died on February 9, 1864. He then got a 30 day furlough and returned home to look after his children, and on March 23, 1864 he married Miss Melissa M. Burris, whom he thought a woothy woman and one capable of taking the responsibility of caring for his little children, and on March 28th, 1864, returned to his regiment at Little Rock, Arkansas, to serve out the remainder of his time, and was honorably discharged on December 21, 1864, and reached home on January 4, 1865.
On March 1, 1865 he moved to Mountrie county, Illinois, and to them were born seven children.       He Moved to Ellsworth County, Kansas, February 10, 1876 and lived there until the fall of 1888. He then started for Oregon, arriving in Eugene on September 24, 1888, and resided near Springfield untill October 1, 1897, when he moved onto his farm where he now resides, and wher this great family reunion was held on November 26, 1808, this being the first and only time the ten living children have ever all been home at one time. He has 36 living grandchilren and 31 living great grand children. and the total number present on this occasion was 70. Mrs. I. Hudson of portland, a niece of Thomas J. Brabham, was also present as an honored guest. whom he had not seen for 43 years, this being a very enjoyable meeting and talking of olden times. She was also present at the Brabham reunion held in Benedict, Nebraska, on September 1, 1908.
An elegant Thanksgiving dinner was served at 2 o'clock. The table fairly groaned under its great load of good things to eat, and at which 45 guests were seated, all doing justice to this bountiful feast, consisting of turkey, geese, chickens, cranberry sauce, pickles, pumpkin pie, mince pie, and cake of all kinds, and other things too numerous to mention. The dining hall was decorated with beautiful chrysanthemums.
The birthday cake was made and presented to Thomas J. Brabham by his granddaughter, Miss Dana Brabham of Eugene. Around this cake burned 78 candles, representing his 78th birthday anniversary. The guest all cheered when the cake was presented to him.
The rest of the day was ocupied in music and singing and a general good time. Mr. Brabham is now is now hale and hearty and spry as an average man of 60 years, and he is a staunch republican haviving always voted the straight republican ticket from Lincolnto taft. Mrs. Brabham, his wife, was born in Washington County, Ohio. on July 4, 1839, and is now in her seventieth year.
At a very late hour the guests departed for their respective homes, wishing Grandpa and Grandma Brabham many happy returns of the day.
