Pioneer Farmer

Agile Octogenarian Still Running Farm

by Cornelia Weil of the Reminder

Three weeks ago, Will Brabham of Crow reshingled his barn roof. One week later, he celebrated his eighty-sisth birthday.

This white-haired octogenarian continues to carry out all the necessary chores around his 103-acre farm-- -- from plowing and planting fields to raking and pitching loose hay into his barn. He may also be seen driving his vintage truck around the small community and proudly displaying a recently renewwd driver's license.

In fact, the one concession Brabham makes to his age is an extra two hours of sleep in the morning. whereas he used to get up at 4 a. m. , he now gets up at 6 a. m.
Born in Kansas in 1882, Brabham came to Oregon in 1888 with his parents, his two brothers and five sisters. "My father had tried homesteading back there but after three bad years, he decided to move on to Oregon, " Brabham said. "We Came into Portland on what was known then as the 'immigrant train' "
Bramham destinctly remembers that it took three days to get from Kansas to Oregon. "I only remember to because I was wearing a pair of shose that were too small, " he said. "My mother wouldn't let me take them off for fear I would lose them, so I endured three seemingly endless of agony. "
When Brabham came to Eugene, the city had a population of 2,000. He first attended Central School- - "that was where Pacific First Federal is now "- -and Gray school.
Brabham was reluctant to talk of the past becase "some people tell all the things they have done and everyone else thinks they must be really old." But he recalled with enthusiasm his settlement on 40 acres of land near Wolf Creek in 1927.
"Crow had only one store then- - there were hardly any roads and even fewer neighbors, " Brabham said. "But now- -why just the other day we counted eight families around here. "
Over the years Brabham has Planted hay, grain and stock on his land. He says his driversified farming has saved him from many agricultural disasters over the past 40 years due to weather.
When he was still using horse teams to plow and mow, Brabham and a neighbor Alva McCullough would work toghter on their two fields. Mrs. McCullough recalled that the two friends "used to get up at 4 a. m. and race to the field to see who would get there first."
The advent of the tractor plow and electric lights stand out in Brabham's memory. He said the first tractor he ever saw was in Noti in 1936- - "an old Atlas Chambers model." McCullough and Brabham recalled that "Our horse teams colud plow circles around that tractor."
Ten years later, Brabham ordered his first tractor, but he still had to wait over a year for delivery. "I'm using that tractor today, " he noted. "Just sent it down last summer to have the motor overhauled for the first time.!"
Brabham married Jenny Cruger of Crow in 1946, who had tow Children by a previous marriage- -Francis Brabham and Margaret Hulburt of Junction City. About this time his farm, which now wncompassed a total of 320 acres, was wired for electricity.
About eight years ago Brabham fell off the roof of his house while reshingling it. "I was in the hospital for seven weeks with a broken hip and arm, " he said. "The doctor told me I could never use the arm again."
But today, the sprightly farmer is again working his 103 Acres, Building Fences and Clearing land with the assistance of his long time friend, McCullough.
Remarking on his 30-year friendship, Brabham noted with a shy smile that a neighbor had recently asked him "if Alva and I were still married. "
Brabham attributes his longevity and agility to hard work that "keeps me too busy to get lonesome" and the early to bed" philosphy. But he conceded, somewhat ruefully, that "Probably next havest I'll have to use a baler on my hay like other folks. "

This was done about 1968 or after May of 1968
