John Luke (b. 10 December 1826, d. 24 March 1898)

John Luke (son of John Luke and Isabella Guthrie) was born 10 December 1826 in Fossoway, and died 24 March 1898 in Denny. He married Elizabeth McNaughton on 10 November 1849 in Dollar, daughter of John McNaughton and Janet Clapperton.

Notes for John Luke:
After working some years in the mill at Crook of Devon, John moved to Denny in 1858, where he became manager to Mr Robert Weir at Carrongrove Paper Works. In 1869, he leased th Headwood bleach mill, which he reconstructed and coverted into a paper mill.
Later, his son James took over this mill, sons Alexander and Robert opened the Vale Mill, and son Major John Luke opened the Anchor Mill.
These four sons founded The Vale Paper Company in Denny in 1894.
In 1936, the John Luke Mill and The Vale Paper Company were taken over by the Associated Paper Mills Ltd, in turn changing its name to the Vale Board Mills Ltd.
These mills were demolished some years ago.
John Luke and his wife Elizabeth are both buried in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow.
He was sessions leader in Dunipace Parish Church.
He died leaving five sons and four daughters.
The 1881 census gave the home address as Falkirk Road, Headswood House, Denny.
