He was born in Ireland, and probably arrived in Scotland in the late 1840s, under the name John Connell, according to the 1851 census, aged 45,with his wife Elizabeth , aged 41. They brought their family, Marten aged 21 in 1851, Thomas aged 19, John aged 17, and Mary aged 15. At the 1861 census, the name is listed as Connel, John being now 54, and his wife now listed as Bridget, being 50. John is listed as being a Ploughman in Prestonkirk area.
At the 1861 census, his sons name is given as Marton , aged 30, with a wife Mary also born in Ireland whose age is given as 20 which is doubtful. Their children are, John aged 5, James aged 3, and Thomas aged 1, all born in Prestonkirk.
