Jean Barsalou and Helene Lamarque were married on 12 Ju 1671 so the document below was written as they were getting ready to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.

Separation of estate 14 Mat 1686- Agen,
Jean Barsalou and Helene Lamarque

Present, Pierre Chabrie the King's counselor from the jurisdiction of Agen - place: in the court office.

Appearing was Helena Lamarque wife of Jean Barsalou, merchant, assisted by Guillaume Renaud, his attorney, the said Barsalou stated that since the marriage contract between the said Lamarque and the said Barsalou, 12 Jul 1671 there was assigned to the said Lamarque the sum of 600 pounds in cash, 100 pounds in personal property and other goods, expressed in the said contract, which the said Barsalou withdrew, and thus the said Lamarque is notified that since the said contract, the said Barsalou, her husband accumulated many debts, among others, on behalf of Gratien Duperier, merchant, the sum of 800 pounds, Jean Fonfrede, attorney, 200 pounds, durfort, merchant, 800 pounds and several others; fearing she could lose her dowry, Lamarque bessches and requests her husband to agree to a separation of their estate not to obstruct or prevent her from collecting and enjoying her dowry, until such time that her dowry is completely paid.

The King's counselor stated that the separation of the estate is without prejudice.

Following the order, Barsalou and Lamarque raised their hand and declared that they will respect the separation of the estates, I, the undersigned royal judge hereby certify the separation after the consent of Mr Barsalou declares requiring and retaining for the benefit of the said Lamarque and duly separated from the Barsalou estate and forbids the creditors of the said Barsalou to bother nor to prevent the said Lamarque from collecting and enjoying the entire estate until such time when she is entirely reimbursed for her dowry.

The said Barsalou signs, but not the said Larmarque, claiming that she is unable to sign/
