Notes for REV. WILLIAM EDDY:
William Eddy was educated at St. John's & Trinity Colleges, Cambridge England where he received his A.M. Degree. In August 1591 he became Vicar of St. Dunstan's Church, Cranbrook, Kent Co., England and officiated there for about 25 years, until he decease. The Parish register contains 80 pages written in his hand and three title pages which are richly illuminated. Besides the records of births, baptism, burials, etc., found in this book, there is also entered his own marriage, in his own handwriting, which had occurred a few years prior to his coming to Cranbrook. "William Eddye, Vicar, to Mary Fosten, virgin. She was the daughter-in-law (probably meaning step-daughter) to Mr. Andrew Ruck."
The following is from Joseph Porter, "Jonathan Eddy, "pg. 31; "Rev. William Eddy, A.M., was Vicar of Cranbrook County of Kent in England, of Saint Dunston's Church, from 1589 to 1616. He was a gentleman of much method and order in all his movements in the Parish. He was a strict Episcopalian and did very much for his church and parishioners. All the loose registers of the parish dating back from 1588, were collected, arranged and properly entered by him in a new parchment book purchased by him for the express purpose. For this service he was paid by the Parish the sum of 4 pounds. He beautifully engrossed about eighty of its folio pages besides illuminating others. The records are now (1859) in a good state of preservation. On one page therein is the following entry: "Paid that was spent in charges riding to Canterbury for to carry in the first money gathered here for Virginia."
The will of the Rev. William Eddye, Vicar of Cranbrook, Co., Kent, England, dated 20 August 1616, and proved 4 December 1616 in the Court of the Archdeacon of Canterbury, mentions son Phineas, Sarah Eddye the widow (Note: this requires further research as I'm unaware of a second wife of this name.) John, Samuel and Zacharias the sons, Marie Evernden wife of Samuel Evernden, Abigail, Anne, Elizabeth, and Priscilla Eddye the daughters. Archdeanery of Canterbury, Book 61, page 331, District Probate Registry at Canterbury.
