JOHN TREADWELL, SR. (b. 11 Feb 1675/76, d. 15 Aug 1715)
JOHN TREADWELL, SR. (son of SAMUEL TREADWELL and RUTH WHEELER) was born 11 Feb 1675/76 in FAIRFIELD, CT., and died 15 Aug 1715 in STRATFIELD, CT.. He married ABIGAIL MINOR on 08 Feb 1698/99 in WOODBURY, CT., daughter of JOHN MINER and ELIZABETH BOOTH.
Notes for JOHN TREADWELL, SR.:
John lived at Pequonnock, now Stratford, CT.
John was a Captain in the Royal Colonial Service during the bloody King Philips War against the Indians and received land grants in North Fairfield and Newtown, CT, for his service. Abigail Minor was born in Woodbury, CT., after the war. She married John in Woodbury, CT on 8 FEB 1699. There were minor relatives still in Stratfield so it is possible that she met John of Stratfield during a visit to Stratfield. At this time Woodbury was a frontier town in the French- Indian War and might have been staying in Stratfield to avoid Indian attacks. John died 15 Aug 1715. Abigail married the second time to Lt. Richard Miles on 22 Aug 1721. Her sons John 16 and Hezeklah 14, chose Mr. Joseph Booth of Stratfield as guardian at this time, and the Court appointed Mr. Thomas Hawley guardian for Ephiram 11 and Jabez 6. Ephriam chose Joseph Booth for guardian, on 27 Jul 1728 when he was 18 years old.
Joseph Booth was probably a descendant of their grandmother, Elizabeth Booth Minor.
Thoams Hawley of Stratfield was an executor of John Treadwell will in 1716.
Adoniram, their first son obtained 100 acres of land from his father/Minor estate near New Milford in 1729.
On 20 May 1740, Hezekiah Treadwell of Stratfield and Ephraim Treadwell of Farmington were conveyed the right in Newtown common land which descended to them from their father John of Stratfield.
John was chosen Burgess for Queens County in 1691 to "attend his Majesty's Service" at Fort William Henry. On his way, he was arrested for some unknown charge. The Assembly refused to seat him because of it. It could not have been a major matter, however, as he was there after frequently to fill offices of trust and great importance.
