MATTHEW ESTES (son of ROBERT ESTES, JR. and DOROTHY WILSON) was born 28 May 1645 in DOVER, KENT, ENGLAND, and died 09 Jul 1723 in SALEM, MA. He married PHILADELPHIA JENKINS on 14 Jun 1676 in DOVER, N.H., daughter of REYNOLD JENKINS and ANN GALE.

Matthew was a Master Mariner, and a Quaker, who came to New England before 1676. When he was at Dover, NH, on 25 May 1682 he was at Piscataqua (now Portsmouth, NH), when for 101 pounds he buys of Jonathan Prince of Salem, Ma, cordwainer, and his wife Mary, his dwelling house and shops adjoining, outhouses and grounds in Salem, Ma., containing about twenty rods, being the house and land he lately bought of Thomas Maule, bounded west of Richard Croads, east on George Deane, north on Thomas Robbins, south on Essex, Street. he removed shortly after to Salem, and took possession.
He was master of the Sloop "Unity" of Boston, Daniel Zachary, owner, in 1697-98, a square-sterned vessel of about forth tons burden. In 1704 he was one of a committee with his brother Richard authorized by the Society of Friends "to speak to Daniel Zachary to know the charges he had been about the prisoners. "On 20 FEB 1695, he bought of his brother, Richard, of Lynn, Ma. In 1703 he bought more land there and was living in Lynn, 25 Jun 1706 when he bought land in Salem of Robert Kitchen and built a second house.
His will was dated 4 Jun 1723, proved 8 Jul following, and shows that he had much land and property. he married 14 Jun 1676 to Philadelphia (Jenkins) Haynes, born in Dover, NH
