His wives were in order of marriage are 1 Hannah Phelps married 23 FEB 1708/1709, 2 Mary Tuller married 26 FEB 1712/1713, 3 Lydia North married Dec 1714, 4 Mary Orton married 31 Oct 1731.

When Samuel was a resident of Simsbury, Conn he is said to have been a merchant trader, as his grandfather, Michael Humphrey had been. He was a man of good education for the time and was in the habit of writing. His name frequently occurs on the "Simsbury Records" in connection with town offices and business transactions.
Around 1739, Ensign Samuel Humphrey and his younger children moved from Simsbury to Goshen, Conn. They settled upon a tract of land which was located at the north end of town. He and his sons gave the name "Humphrey Lane" to the road on which they lived.
When he left his old home, a large number of his friends and neighbors accompanied him as far as the Farmington River ( a distance of 3 miles) and there they spent a night in prayer and praise. In the morning they bade him a kind and tearful farewell--never expecting to see him again in this life. The distance from Simsbury to Goshen was about 32 miles! It is worthy to note that nearly all of his original purchase in Goshen is yet in the hands of his descendants. His great-great-grandson, Lemuel Palmer was the owner of his property a few years since.
