GOV. WILLIAM LEETE (b. 1613, d. 16 Apr 1683)
WILLIAM LEETE (son of JOHN LEETE and ANNA SHUTE) was born 1613 in DODINGTON, HUNTINGDON, ENGLAND, and died 16 Apr 1683 in HARTFORD, CT.. He married ANNA PAYNE on 16 Apr 1638 in ENGLAND, daughter of JOHN PAYNE and ANNE UNDERHILL.

William Leete was married three times. First to Anna Payne. Second to Sarah Rutherford on 7 Apr 1670 who died 10 FEB 1673, she was the widow of Henry Rutherford. Third he married widow Mary Newman who died 13 Dec 1683 she was the widow of Governor Francis Newman.
William was an early settler of New Haven Colony and signed the Plantation Convenant of 1 Jun 1639.
On the formation of the church at Guilford, CT, Mr Leete's place of residence, he became one of the seven original members.
Upon the arrival of the Regicides in New Haven in March 1661, Gov. Leete received them in a most hospitable manner, and throughout the excitement and danger which ensued, proved himself one of their warmest friends. He was always well advised of their place of concealment, although for a long time he did not see them, as he was thereby enabled to say, with truth when questioned by the pursuivants as to the whereabouts of the Judges, that he had not seen them for such a manner of weeks. The Regicides were lodged in the Governor's stone cellar, at Guilford, for about a week, and fed from his table, though without seeing their friend and benefactor.
