Notes for Robert Williams:
Descendants of Robert Williams (three other) of Plainfield, and Voluntown, Connecticut.

By Garnett Leonard Powers, A.M of Fairhaven, MA.

The Genealogies of several other families of Williams have already been printed, and the most notably known are the Descendants of Robert Williams of Roxbury, by Stephen Williams M.D., A.M. Greenfield, MA. 1847, printed by Merriam, and Mirick. And the Descendants of Roger Williams of Providence, R.I., by Bertha Williams Anthony compiled 1949. While both of those families share the same immediate geographical distribution, in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. There exist no documented or factual relationship with either of these two distinquished Williams families to our Robert Williams of Plainfield, Conn. The only relationship thus found is that of three New England families sharing a common ancestral name.

Our Robert Williams b. 1681, perhaps the son of Robert Williams of Killingworth, Conn. Of this Robert Williams of Killingworth, only this little is known he is listed in the 1670 Census of Connecticut, under Fence Listing for the Town of Killingworth. He is also mentioned in the recording of Freemen for the Town of Killingworth. His only recorded child was Mary Williams b. 6 Jun 1671, in the Town of Killingworth, Conn. She married 7 Jun 1690, in Norwich, Conn., to Benjamin Rood. In August 1690 Mary and her husband, Benjamin Rood, sold the house of her father Robert Williams, listed as recently deceased. After which they removed to Plainfield, Windham Co., Conn., about the same time as our Robert Williams of Plainfield, settled their. Both Mary (Williams) Rood and the wife of Robert Williams of Plainfield, Hannah Williams were members of the First Congregational Church of Plainfield, Conn., established 1705. There is no other evidence in either deeds or wills to prove a relationship between Robert of Killingworth, Conn., and Robert of Plainfield, Conn.

Robert Williams (Yeoman) was born probably in Killingworth, Conn., abt 1681 and died in the town of Voluntown, Connecticut, on April 1740. He married Hannah ca. 1705, and they were residing in Plainfield, Conn., when there first child was born. Hannah died 2 Mar 1757 in Voluntown, Conn. It is in Plainfield first, that he is mentioned, 12 Mar 1707 voated town granted on the same day it was voated thee Robert Williams shall have 50 acre's of land on the east side of Egonk Hill lying to the south of ye Greenwich old Indian path, he bearing his proportion of charge in the town as to maintaining of an Orthodox Ministry and other charges. Roberts land which were in the extreme north east corner of Plainfield, were annexed to Voluntown Conn., when Voluntown was incorporated in May of 1719. "The assembly then ordered, on May 1719, that so much of the lands lying north of the present bounds of Voluntown and east of the bounds of Plainfield, as should be needful for making a good parish there for comforable carrying on the worship of God, should be annexed to Voluntown and forever after be accounted within the bounds of that town." On 22 Apr 1720, Robert Williams purchased one of the land grants to soldiers of the Narragansett Indian Wars; #22 a one hundred acres lot in two pieces with allowance for a highway. In 1721 Robert was admitted by the vote of town council as a inhabitant of the town of Voluntown. On the 13 Apr 1724 Robert's cattle markings were intered in the town selectmans book as "a smooth crop of ye left ear and a dimond thus out of ye right ear". Robert became involved in a controversy to elocate the site chosen for a house of worship, supporting those whom resided in the northern portion of Voluntown, against the town's committee choice of the geographical center of town. Robert signed on the 14 May 1724 the following petition, to the Connecticut General Assembly, pleading for the establishment of a church in the Northern part of Voluntown. "That the town agreed first that the meeting house should be placed in the center, which is not the center of the present inhabitants, but in an obscure place, far from the county road and surrounded by swamps and precipies of rock and badlands so that no good ways can be made there without excessive charge to the town, and beg for another committee."

Robert was also involved in several land transactions between 1718 and 1738 in both Plainfield and Voluntown Connecticut, were he owned between 300 to 350 acres of land. On 16 Feb 1727 for parental love and affection which I have and do bare towards my own beloved son in law William Kille and daughter Elizabeth he granted them 50 acres free and clear. He also granted to his son in law Samuel Welch and his daughter Amy 50 acres free and clear. Samuel Welch already had been living on part of his fathers, (James Welch) Narragansett Indian war grant lot # 18, in Voluntown, Conn. All three families the Williams, Welch, and Kille's lived next to each other in the then North West part of Voluntown. No will has been recorded from Robert Williams to his family, but on 14 Jul 1738, Robert for love and affection gave his two younger sons Roger and William "all my lands lying on the North side of a small river called and known by the name of Quanduck River." Roger then was 21 years old and William was 19 years old at this time. His older son Robert Jr. was now married with three children, and living on his own farm, just north of his fathers land. On the 22 of may 1740, a deed was intered by the heirs of Robert williams stating "we have made an agreement to share the distribution of his lands, amongst his family. No grave stone can be found for Robert whom deceased between April - May 1740, but "he was buried, on the westside of his land bordering the Whetstone Brook, on the lands now owned by William
Williams.
