 Includes NotesNotes for EDWARD TREDWELL:
Edward was the six son and the eight child of Thomas Tredwell of Epwell, Oxfordshire, England was baptized at St Anne Church on 20 Dec 1607. He emigrated to Ipswich, Mass Bay Colony in the period of 1635 to 1637 to join his brother Thomas.
Thomas born 1603 had come to Ipswich with his wife Mary and 1 year old child, Thomas Jr., on the ship Hopewell in July 1635. Edward's name first appears on the Ipswich town records on 5 Feb 1637 when he was granted 6 acres for planting. The last Ipswich record is 11 Mar 1639. He took his family to the Colony of New Haven, Conn after 1639.
The Colony of New Haven was founded by Rev. John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton in 1638 with settlers, mostly from London. The Colony was without a Charter and did not purchase the lands from the Indians. A war was fought with the Pequat Indians and the Indians were driven south and west and almost exterminated. In 1639 a "Bible Commonwealth" was established in New Haven Colony and the franchise was restricted to church members. In 1643 New Haven, Milford, Guilford, and Stamford were united in the Republic of New Haven and they concluded the New England Confederation with Mass Bay Colony, Plymouth Colony, and Conn., Colony. In general the Confederation was a loosely organized league with a braod of 8 comissioners, two fron each Colony. They were given the power to determine questions relating to Indians, War, Peace, and diputes between the Colonies. Any dispute that lacked 6 affirmative votes would be referred back to the Colonies. The plan provided that each Colony provide soldiers and supplies in proportion to the number of males between 16 and 60 in each Colony. The Confederation lasted until 1684 when the Mass bay Colony Charter was revocted by England.
Edward probably moved to the Colony of New haven sometime after the Republic of New haven was established. The first record of his being in Conn., was at a Branford Town meeting held on 16 Sep 1646 concerning a fence to be built around the town. In the Branford meeting of 8 Nov 1646, Edward voted for the imposition of a fine for people who did not attend town meetings, and for a reward for killing wolves. The last Branford record of Edward's participation in Town meetings was April 1648 when he voted for a allotment of land. He then moved with his family across Long Island sound to Southhold, LI also claimed by the Colony of New Haven. Southold records show that he obtained deed to land on 8 Oct 1649. He signed the deed by his mark. He then moved to Huntington, LI. He had the ideals of modern zoing hearing board member as on the 17th May 1660, he and his three neighbors of the neck of land commonly called Hashamommack, LI proclaimed in the Southold records that "considering our comfort and quiet settlement... that what man so ever should desire to sell his accommodations should sell only to other inhabitants that the neighbors approve of". Edward died in 1660.
His estate inventory was made on 30 Jan 1661. He had an estate worth approximately 285 Ibs sterling and gave 1/3 to his wife, Sarah, and the remainder to his 6 children. The known children are Samuel, John, and Rebecca who married Edward Highbee. The other three are believed to have died young or are daughters that married and are lost in available records.
