JOHN COGGESHALL (b. Abt. 1618, d. 01 Oct 1708)
JOHN COGGESHALL (son of JOHN COGGESHALL III and MARY STURGIE) was born Abt. 1618 in HALSTEAD, ESSEX, ENGLAND, and died 01 Oct 1708 in PORTSMOUTH, R.I.. He married ELIZABETH BAULSTONE on 17 Jun 1647 in PORTSMOUTH, R.I., daughter of WILLIAM BAULSTONE and ELIZABETH POTTER.
Notes for JOHN COGGESHALL:
John and Elizabeth have one of the earliest recorded divorces in the Colonies. Divorced on 25 May 1655.
John was born in England and came to New England in 1632 with his parents. They lived in Portsmouth, R.I., until 1654 when they moved to Newport, R.I., where he had inherited his father's large estate, and where he lived until he died.
He was long and often in office, for nearly half a century, exhibting eminent executive ability. He was General Treasurer for the four towns in the Colony in 1653/54 and in 1664/1672; A commissioner in Newport 1654/1663; A petitioner to the New Charter granted by Charles II - 1663, and at the first General Election under the Charter 4 May 1664.
He was elected one of the first Assistants, and was re-elected to this office several times to 1686.
He was Deputy for Newport R.I., 25 Oct 1665, and in 1667-1671, 1675 and 1683. He was General Recorder 1676/77 and 1691/92. As a result of the Indian uprising known as King Philip's War on 4 Apr 1676 he was on a committee to procure boats for the Colony's defense. There were to be five boats with five or six men in each. He was also on a committee to take the exact count of all inhabitants on the Island, English, Negroes and Indians, and make a list thereof, and also to take account of how all persons are provided with corn, guns, powder, shot and member of a court martial held for trial of Indians.
He was Deputy Governor in 1686 and in 1689-90. It is said that he was proposed for Governor several times but declined to serve. But few men of the time exerted greater influence or rendered the Colony such faithful service.
