SAMUEL SMEDLEY (son of BAPTIST SMEDLEY and KATHERINE SHORTHOSE) was born 27 Mar 1646 in CONCORD, MASS., and died 02 Aug 1675 in QUABOAG, MASS. He married HANNAH WHEELER on 11 Jul 1667 in CONCORD, MASS., daughter of EPHRAIM WHEELER and ANN TURNEY.

Samuel Smedley was killed by Indians at Quabaug, near Brookfield, Mass 2 Aug 1675, during King Phillip's War. Captain Thomas Wheeler, Samuel's wife's uncle, had raised a small force of about 20 men from the Concord area to escort a group that was to negotiate with the Indians in the area with the hope of securing and end to hostilities in the region. The force reached Brookfield and attempted to find the Indians at a prearranged site about five miles from Brookfield. When they did not find them, they marched futher and were ambushed near a swamp by a force estimated to number from between 200-300 Indinas. Eight men, Samuel Smedley included, fell quickly and were later buried in an obscure grave that has never been located.
