Notes for MARIE JEANNE CUSSON:
Marie's first two husbands were fur trappers, and killed by the Iroquois. Her parents had both emigrated from the town of Rouenin Normandie, France, but were married in Trois Rivieres, Quebec.
Marie was the fourth child ( and fourth daughter) in a family of 16 children, three of whom were born after she left home at age 16 to get married. (She was the second of these siblings to marry. Her oldest sister had married at age 13.) Her first husband was Jean Bareau, a 28 year old French immigrant. They settled in La Prairie, Quebec, where she was to live for the rest of her life. At 19 she had her first child and then one each year for the next four years, until Jean was killed by the Iroquois. By this time she was 24 years old. two years later, she married Joachim Le Ber, a 28 year old Canadian from Montreal. They had one daughter born in the first year of their marriage. The records do not list a date of death for Joachim, but indicate that he was lost on a "fur trading expedition in the west." marie married for a thrid and last time at age 33. Like the previous 2 husbands, Claude Guerin was 28 years old on his wedding day, November 19. Obviously Claude was the French Soldier. The records indicate that he was "Soldade la Companie Novan." his parents were Michel Guerin and Jeanne vernon of Lusignan, Poitou, France. His redords show the addition of "Dit la Fontaine", nor present on his fathers records. Nine months after the wedding marie and Claude's first was born. two years later, Jean Bapiste was born in 1699 and the twins in 1701. Marie had her last child, a daughter at age 40. Five years later, Claude died, leaving her to raise Jean baptiste, aged 9, his 10 year old brother, 5 year old sister and the 7 year old twins. She never remarried; lived another 30 years; and died in la prairie at age 75 in 1738.
