JANUARY 19, 1971

Emmett C. Callahan, son of Yateman Lewis Callahan and Elizabeth Catherin Moore:

1901

Yateman Lewis Callahan lived on 3rd Avenue South in a small 3 room house in 1901 along with his family. The same house is still standing as to this date, and hope to get a photo of it to attach to this.

He, Emmett Colby Callahan, went to work for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1901 after his father, Yateman Lewis Callahan, signed a minor's release for him to go to work.

During the time Emmett C. Callahan was working for L&N Railroad, he had double pneumonia and liked to have died from it. They were still living on 3rd Ave. S.

1904

Emmett C. Callahan and Charlie Linsley went to St. Louis to see the fair. They rode the L&N train there and the main attraction of the fair was the (Vulcan) which now stands atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama. Vulcan was first moved to the fairgrounds in Birmingham, Alabama, and later transferred to it present site.

1905

Yateman Lewis Callahan, along with his family, moved from Decatur, Alabama in November of 1905, back to the home place in Lawrence County, Alabama to begin farming. Emmett C. Callahan quit the Louisville and Nashville R.R. in November 1905 and returned to help his father with the farm. He was around 19 years old at this time. Continued helping with the 640 acre farm for my dad, Yateman Lewis Callahan.

1907

Emmett Colby Callahan and Maggie Marzie Taylor were married on April 1907 by Justice of the Peace Frank A. Cowan, and settled down to farm like on their allotted 42 acre farm which had been divided up between all the children. Seven children were born to them; Maudy Bell, Ruby Leigh, Dona Mae, Cora Irene, James Dee, all at the home place in Lawrence County.

Emmett C. Callahan traded his homeplace farm of 42 acres to Hi Hicks for his 40 acre farm, and always known as the "Hicks" place. There, a son was born, and his name was Travis Coleman Callahan on August 16, 1921.

1922

Emmett Colby Callahan went to work again for the L&N Railroad on August 4, 1922. Continued on with the farm until it was gathered, and ate and slept in the L&N while the strike was on. Row after row of cots were set up for them. Then in November 1922, he moved his family to Decatur, Alabama on 6th Avenue South, then to Austinville, Moulton Heights, where Dorothy Louise Callahan was born. While living in Moulton Heights, Emmett Colby Callahan traded his 82 acre farms in Lawrence County for a house at 1712 9th Ave. South (on Billy Goat Hill) to John Strickland. Traded for both farms feor house and lot, with approximately $300.00 to $500.00 boot.
