OBITUARY 27 SEPTEMBER 1979 DAILY DECATUR

      Funeral for Mrs. Ruby Leigh Gomes, 70, of 302 Fifth Ave. NW, who died last night at Decatur General Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shelton Funeral Home chapel, Revs. Bert Murphy and Paul McClusky officiating, with burial in Roselawn Cemetery, Shelton Funeral Home directing.

      Survivors include her husband, Rev. J.A. Gomes of Decatur, a son, Alva Gomes of Decatur; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Childers of Decatur; two grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Irene Young and Mrs Dana Mae King, both of Decatur, and Mrs. Dorothy Davis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother J. Dee Callahan of Louisville, Ky.

      Pallbearers will be Cleveland Cross, Posey Thompson, Homer Montgomery, James P. Spigner, Rudolph Slate, Mike Callahan and David Childers.

      Mrs. Gomes was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. With her husband, she had been a long-time resident of the North Alabama area. He pastored several churches through 1972.

      Mrs. Gomes had been employed by Mutual Savings Life Insurance Co. before her retirement.

      The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Joseph Alva Gomes came to the United States when he was 18 months old in June 1908, along with his mother, Adeline Martin Gomes, and two older sisters to join their father, who had come to the United States 6 months earlier. He was employed as a cabinet maker, which he remained for the rest of his life. Manuel V. Gomes (Father) and Adeline Martin Gomes (Mother) settled in Boston, Mass., after coming to the United States by boat (The SS Canopie) in June 1908.

Rev. J.A. Gomes and Ruby Lee Gomes moved to Boston, Mass. April 22, 1936.

Moved back to Louisville, Kentucky Aug. 1937.

Moved back to Decatur, Alabama May 1938.

OBITUARY 27 SEPTEMBER 1983 DAILY DECATUR

The Rev. J.A. Gomes

      Funeral for the Rev. J.A. Gomes Sr., 76, of 700 Cedar Lake Road SW, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Burt Murphy and the Rev. Paul McClusky officiating.

      Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.

      He died Tuesday at Parkway Medical Center Hospital. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was a resident of Decatur for 45 years where he pastored several churches in the area.

      He is survived by one son, J. Alva Gomes Jr. of Decatur; one daughter, Helen Childers of Decatur; two brothers, John Gomes of Redding, Mass., and Louis Gomes of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Tina Correia and Mary Eldridge, both of St. Petersburg; and two grandchildren.

      Pallbearers will include Posey Thompson, Louis Davis, Doug Childers, David Childers, J.P. Speigner, J.D. Callahan and Mike Callahan.
