NOTE: At this point there is a gap we are attempting to close. According to pension application information and the Confederate Census of Morgan County, Alabama, William enlisted as a Private in Capt. Hamby's Company in the Patterson Regiment in May 1863 at Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama. These applications also state he enlisted in the service of the State, or Confederate States, as a Private in Company B in the 30th Ga. Infantry on the 28th day of August, 1861 at Stockbridge, Henry County, Ga and that he was wounded in the right shoulder by a shell on 30 Nov 1864 in the Battle of Franklin, TN.

From other records it was learned that William's son in law, Nathan Harrison Farrington, the husband of his oldest daughter, Mary Ann Rhodes, enlisted as a Private in Co. C of the 1st Alabama Cavalry Nov 20, 1861 to March 1, 1862 on a Roll dated Mar 24, 1862. He was reenlisted Mar 20, 1862 in Tuscumbia, Alabama by James W. Harper for "the war", meaning the duration. He was blinded by powder shortly afterward on 7 April 1862 in the Battle of Shiloh, TN.

Records of the 1st Alabama Cavalry lists the counties and captains comprising this Regiment. Under Morgan County it lists J. W. Harper (Resigned); Josiah Patterson (company detached). We are trying to determine if this is the Patterson referred to in the pension applications and Confederate census. Given the fact that William's son in law was in the unit, and that it was comprised of Morgan and Lawrence county men, this seems to be a reasonable assumption. However, nothing concrete has been established.*

*National Archive records indicate lst Lt. Josiah Patterson was recruited by James W. Harper, who had recruited N. H. Farrington. Upon Harper's resignation, company command was assumed by Josiah Patterson and he was promoted to Captain. He was later promoted to Colonel and was in Command of the 5th Alabama Cavalry at its surrender at Selma, Alabama.

We will resume with documented accounts following the wounding at Franklin, TN.

      Children of W
ILLIAM RHODES and MARGARET PARKER are:
4. i.   MARY ANN3 RHODES, b. August 1845, Burke or Buncombe County, North Carolina; d. 23 December 1915, Winston County, Alabama.
ii.   EVELINE RHODES, b. Abt. 1847, Burke County, North Carolina; m. EZRA MILLER, 14 September 1865, Butler County, Alabama.
  Notes for EVELINE RHODES:
1870 Census of Crenshaw County, Alabama Sheet 077, lists an Ezra Miller with wife, Eveline. The ages of this couple raises doubt that this is "our" Eveline. The search is still going on for the Eveline last seen on the 1860 Basham Gap, Alabama census.

iii.   JAMES RHODES, b. Abt. 1851, Georgia; m. (1) DELPHIA O. MCDANIEL, 20 September 1870, Lawrence County, Alabama; m. (2) RHODA STOVER, 27 July 1880, Lawrence County, Alabama.
  Notes for JAMES RHODES:
Lawrence County, Alabama marriage records list two (2) James Rhodes licenses. One is Jas. Rhodes-Delpha O. McDaniel, Book E, p. 304, and the other is James Rhodes-Rhoda Stover, Book H, p. 374. Delpha McDaniel is the most likely, as the marriage date is near the marriage date of his twin brother, Thomas. Efforts are still being to made to locate Thomas and James after their marriages. Thomas may have been located in Santa Rosa County, FL on the 1900 census with wife Emma, but this has not been definitely established.

Another record indicates the following:

Delphe O. McDaniel - Rhoads, Gus September 20, 1870

Notes for R
HODA STOVER:
This marriage may not have been one of "our" Thomas', as he would have been nearly 30 at the time. Delpha was more likely to have been his only wife.

5. iv.   THOMAS RHODES, b. Abt. 1851, Georgia.
6. v.   GEORGE WASHINGTON RHODES, b. 30 August 1854, Georgia; d. 24 August 1926, Lawrence County, Alabama.
7. vi.   WILLIAM BRYANT RHODES, b. 2 December 1856, Georgia; d. 25 April 1944, RR 3 Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama.
vii.   BENJAMIN RHODES, b. Abt. 1859, Georgia.
  Notes for BENJAMIN RHODES:
The first record of Benjamin was found on the 1860 Morgan County, Alabama census, Basham Gap page 400, at age (1) and born in Georgia.

As no record has been found in the censuses for 1870, the next appearance was on the 1880 census taken on 2 June 1880 in Blount County, Alabama, where Benjamin was listed as either a "boarder" or "brother" at age 21. He is in the household of his oldest sister, Mary Ann, and her husband, Nathan Harrison Farrington.

At this time, Benjamin has not been located since appearing on the 1880 census.

8. viii.   MARY BEATRICE (DOLLIE) RHODES, b. 16 October 1863, Lawrence County, Alabama; d. 20 April 1951, Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama.
9. ix.   ALICE E. RHODES, b. Abt. 1867, Lawrence County, Alabama; d. 1896, Lawrence County, Alabama.
Child of WILLIAM RHODES and RACHEL HARVILLE is:
10. x.   DANIEL WEBSTER3 RHODES, b. 19 July 1873, Lawrence County, Alabama; d. 25 July 1933, Ennis, Ellis County, Texas.
