Notes for G
EORGE T. OWENS:
Marriage license G. T. Owen-Margaret Rhodes listed in Book M, p. 112, Lawrence County, Alabama.

Buried at Forest Chapel United Methodist Churchy Cemetery in Morgan County,
Alabama. Margaret is also buried same place. 2 December 1996 Linda Owens Green said she talked with Ed Owens a couple of years ago who told her George was killed when a wagon turned over on him. She also said he was in the Union army. Ruth said her grandmother, Margaret Owens, said George ran away from home when he was a boy and went somewhere up north, not sure where. She said that is probably the reason he joined the Union army. Ruth also said Margaret drew a widow's pension and Tommie drew something for his arm from his daddy's union pension. Need a copy of his papers.

He had one son when he married Margaret. His name was Oliver.

George Owens was found on the roster of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, US, which was formed in Northern Alabama. This is the same unit that the three younger Sterlings were a part of. Three older Sterlings, Hiluriah, George and David Houston, all married the three oldest Livingston girls. Although one of the wives appeared on the relief and salt books of Lawrence County during the war, no records have been located on the men. Hiluriah was the only one to be listed on the 1870 census, leading us to believe the other two did not survive the war.
