Notes for MELVIN NOLAN FREEMAN GABLER: Melvin and Norma met during a Texas oil "boom". In 1934, Mel joined Humble Oil Company (later to become Exxon) in Houston, Texas. In 1936, he was transferred to Talco, where he worked with Norma's dad, Monroe W. Rhodes Sr. Although he met Norma at that time, it was not until several moves later that their friendship blossomed. In 1942 Mel took a leave of absence from Humble to join the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Ellington Field near Houston for a time, then at Bangor, Maine between 1942 and 1945. Mel and Norma were married in Houston on September 6, 1942, in a church founded by the Gabler family. After World War II, Mel returned to Exxon and the family lived in various Texas towns: Benavides, San Diego, Aqua Dulce, Alice, Mexia and Longview. In 1957 they moved to a 68 acre ranch near Hawkins, Texas. (Mel says 68 acres is only a small farm in Texas). Melvin and Norma developed an interest in textbook discrepancies upon discovering erroneous information in their children's school books and started a textbook verification enterprise that become known world-wide. Their travels encompassed a lot of the world and their awards range from their selection by the Encyclopaedia Britannica as two of ninety-five individuals, world-wide, who had the most influence during 1982, to the Texas Senate Award of Appreciation for benefitting education. Norma was selected as one of 107 outstanding mothers in Texas History. Mel was a National Delegate to the White House Conference on Families. Their many honors include State and National awards from the Sons of the American Revolution and the Congress of Freedom Award (ten times). They have appeared on these national television network programs: "60 Minutes", "Good Morning, America", "Nightline", "Today", McNeil-Lehrer Report", "Crossfire", "Donahue" (three times), and "The 700 Club", plus hundreds of other television and radio programs. Jointly or individually they have spoken to dozens of colleges and universities, PTA meetings, conferences, civic clubs, parent groups and educational conventions. They have spoken in 45 of the 50 states - many time in some states. In 1977 the Gablers took a seven-week trip to Australia and New Zealand, where Norma spoke in eight cities in New Zealand and nine in Australia. Although getting up in years and in semi-retirement, they are still active in these programs. |
