ATHAN RICHARDSON:
Jasper County census Precinct 2 taken 21 June 1880 lists Nathan Richardson (29) as head of household with wife Amanda C. (22), Zoe C. (6), Emily J. (5), James A. (3), and William N. (1) in residence.

Nathan was one of the more colorful members of the Richardson family.
Good-natured and cheerful, the loved parties, dancing and hunting. He also believed in good company, good food, and yes, good drink. What is more, he wanted everyone around him to have a good time and did all he could to see that this happened. His wife was of a like nature and, fortunately, she was a woman who did not object to having her furniture moved around or out so that the floors could be made ready for a dance, and she was always ready to welcome a crowd of any size in her home. They had a large family and saw no reason why the children should not enjoy themselves also.

Over the years Nathan built up quite a reputation as a brewer of cane beer. Beer made by others in the community might turn bitter with age, but his - never. Nor did he mind rewarding his boys and their friends with a few nips from his jug after a hard days work or a lively hunt.

For all this gaity and the love of simple rural pleasures, like his father he was a good provider. People who had known him said the table was always set ready to serve anyone who happened to drop by and would eat

The barns, storehouses and cribs were full of dried beans, peas and corn. The smokehouse was never out of bacon, ham, sausage and dried beef and there was a year-round kitchen garden. Berries and fruits were plentiful in season, and out of season they were still there in the form of preserves, canned and dried fruits. Milk, butter and cream were never lacking in abundance. (Amanda, of course, deserves much of the credit for the food.

Altogether life in the Nathan Richardson home was more of less typical of southeastern Texas between Reconstruction and the first World War. People had little cash money, as the saying went, but they lived well in the sense that they had good food, shelter, adequate clothing and no dread of what the future might bring - or so it seems when hearing about them and their lives.

After Amanda's death, he married Sallie Ann Orton, who, too, had a happy, cheerful disposition but was different in that she did not lean so much to parties and dancing. Her home was always open to friends and relatives and she loved her church, enjoyed the meetings, especially all day church and dinner on the grounds, and never tired, so it was said, of music, singing, visiting and entertaining in a quiet way.

  Notes for GILBERT BEEBE RICHARDSON:
Gilbert's grandson, Jiles Perry Richardson Jr. was the "Big Bopper" and he was nearly a major figure in the post-Elvis rock era. He wrote and recorded "Chantilly Lace", a straight-talking rock tune that was the third most-played record in America in 1958 and was released in 37 other countries. On the night of February 2, 1959, with success at his heels and on leave from his job as a disc jockey and program director at Station KTRM in Beaumont, Texas, the Bopper appeared before 1,100 fans at the Surf Ballroom in Mason City, Iowa. Early the next morning, with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, he chartered a Beechcraft Bonanza to take them to Fargo, North Dakota. The plane went down 5 miles northwest of the airport, and no one heard the crash. J.P. Richardson was dead at the age of 24. His album of Chantilly Lace (1958) consisted of: Chantilly Lace, Pink Petticoats, Walking Through My Dreams, The Clock, Someone Watching Over You, Old Maid, Big Bopper's Wedding, Little Red Riding Hood, Preacher And The Bear, It's The Truth, Ruth, White Lightning, Strange Kiss, Singles.
