Notes for D
URHAM RICHARDSON:
Durham was a well-known and regionally famous Primitive Baptist preacher, and was about as colorful as his brother, Nathan. He lived at Magnolia Springs and was in demand all over Jasper County and elsewhere as an inspiring minister of the Gospel. A large, fine-looking man, he was blessed with a good pulpit presence, a good voice and a Message. It is said that people came by horseback, wagon, buggy and surrey from considerable distances to hear him preach, often travelling over rough and muddy roads in all sorts of weather.

He was not only a good preacher but a prosperous farmer who could boast of something uncommon in his part of the world - a vineyard. Whereas cane beer had been his older brother's specialty, his was "grape cordial".

He believed in temperance but not in total abstinance. Moreover, he did not frown on dancing, and his children were encouraged to do the things that made for wholesome, happy living. Each carried his fair share of work on the farm and in the household, and the parents wished them to have their share of the good life they had made.

Jasper County census Precinct 4 taken 10 June 1880 lists Richardson, D. (27), wife Martha J. (27), Virgil A. (7), Misher A. (6), William M. (4), Daniel C. (2) and Mary M. (5/12) all born in Texas.
