Notes for Julius A. Rice:
Julius Rice came over from Copenhagen, Denmark with an Uncle when he was about 15 or 16 years old, according to his daughter Bessie.
Julius and Jessie homesteaded on 160 acres of land east of the Rhea townsite four miles. It was the northeast quarter of the section.
Later they bought another farm east of the Rhea store and finally put three houses together for their home. They gave the origional quarter to Floyd and Leona when they married.
Julius went to Taloga, the county seat, to take the exam for rural mail carrier. He made the highest score on the test of the group that was applying for the job and was hired to carry the mail route out of the post office in the Rhea store.
His first vehicle was a new "mail hack", horse drawn contraption with iron rim wheels, wooden box with side glass windows and doors. the front had a large split glass window with wooden frames. The reins came through the frame of the widows that were notched for that purpose. He carried a charcoal heater for his feet and on the side was a metal holder for a quart jar of coffee. His first car was a chevrolet four door. After he parked it, I played many hours carrying the mail in the old "hack" It just rotted away on the old farm. On the farm he had an old steam engine water tank up on a stand with water piped to the wash house so the boys could take a shower. Couple of chicken houses, garage for his car and a 55gallon barrel for his gasoline. Shop contained a fire box, anvil and vise. Barn had four horse stalls, place to milk, and hay storage. A horse drawn
mill ground the milo and corn for animal feed. The horse walked around and around and the mill had a hopper on top, with the ground feed being caught in a wash tub underneath. He had a saw for the hay piled on the ground. A crosscut for the wood. The house had two chimneys and two wood stoves plus a wood stove for cooking and heating water. A cellar under the east end of the house for incubating eggs and two cisters for water, one on the southwest corner in a screened in porch and another on the north to hold the cream and butter in the summer, that was let down in the cistern on a rope.
