James Mayo (son of Valentine Mayo and Ann Mayo) was born December 11, 1711 in Middlesex County, VA., and died 1776.

A father with eleven sons in the American Revoloution would surely be a record. The Richmond Standard of 18 July 1880 published an article about the family of William Mayo, the surveyor, by the well known historian Alexander Brown in which he stated: "among other Mayo families of Virginia, John Mayo of Hanover, is said to have had 10 brothers in the Revolution." Service records acceptable to the National Society of the
Daughters of the American Revolution have been found for eight of the sons, three sons-in-law and one grandson-in-law of James Mayo.

No material has been printed on this large and interesting family and while the records given here are not complete, it is hoped that this publication will be of value to many. James Mayo had children born for thirty eight years and grandchildren for more than seventy-five years. The duplication of names, multiple marriages, other Mayo families, confusion with May and Mays, migrations, and the loss of many county records have all been problems. Marriages have not been assigned without reason; lacking this they appear as unplaced. It is likely that some of the granddaughters married again; this has not been investigated thoroughly. The records of North Carolina were not searched. Material from Fairfield District, South Carolina, was contributed by Miss Mary Riley, Anderson, S.C.

James Mayo was born 11 Dec. 1711 in Middlesex County, Virginia, son of Valentine Mayo and his wife Ann, as shown by a deed from James to William Davis: ...."land was sold by John Stone and Mary his wife to Vallentine Mayo as may appear by a Deed dated the second day of September 1704 and the said Valentine Mayo dying intestate it descended to his son James Mayo..."
