John Lithgow (b. Abt. 1540)

John Lithgow (son of John Lithgow) was born Abt. 1540 in Drygrange, Roxburgh, Scotland, died in SEE ATTACHED NOTES RE MISSING GENERATION. He married Beatrice Borthwick, daughter of Lord William Borthwick 2ns of Saltray and Janet Sinclair.

On LDS: there are two dates for John Lithgow maried to Beatrice Borthwick:

John Lithgow born 1540 Edinburugh
John Lithgow born 1567 Reidhall Glterand Sauchrell Haddington. Haddington is 20 miles east of Edinburugh, in East Lothian (Dunbar area).

Beatrice Borthwick is described as the daughter of William Borthwick, and William is further described as William Borthwick the Second of Saltrey. On thepeerage.com it is Beatrice Sinclair who is the wife of William Borthwick (2nd). On LDS Beatrice Borthwicks mother is described as being Katharine Cichton. Katharine Crichton is the wife of William Borthwick, the 3RD of Saltray. Different websites number the Borthwick lords differently - see the notes for the earlier Bothwicks in the pedigree above.

The marriage date for John Lithgow and Beatrice Borthwick is given as Sep 1556 - place Edinburgh, in two of three LDS accounts of the wedding. This is despite one account of this same John Lithgow being born in 1567 - 11 years after the date of his wedding.

Beatrice Borthwick is described as being born in Johnstonburn East Lothian in one account and in Edinburugh Parish in another.

It is likely that there is a missing generation i.e. a further John Lithgow (born in 1567), and this John Lithgow is the Son of John Lithgow and Beatrice Borthwick.

LDS also give Beatrice Borthwick as being born in 1542 at Johnstonburn Midlothinan, as well as Abt. 1569 - yet being married to John Lithgow in 1556 - the latter not being possible, as her stated Father William Borthwick is also listed as not being married to Katharine Crichton (her mother) until 1560.

A possible explanation is that there is a missing previous generation, and that the John Lithgow concerned is earlier than that listed here - with Beatrice being a daughter of an earlier William Borthwick.
