 Includes NotesNotes for John Black:

RESIDENCE: "Lived on the South River, at Beverley Manor, Augusta Co. , VA."

"John and Mary are the earliest Black ancestors that we have any information about at this time (February 1988). It appears that they were of Scotch-Irish ancestry and spent most, or all, of their married life in Augusta Co., VA, south and east of Staunton. The South River flows through that area and the Manor Beverley is mentioned several times in the material quoted below.
Their son, John, and his wife migrated to Kentucky in 1785. An entry in Chalkley's Volumes states: "August 19, 1777, Mary Black, widow of John Black, deceased, qualifies administrator."
Other information recorded in Chalkley's Volumes about an 1801 court case shows: that the senior John Black rented 738 acres at Manor Beverley and lived there at least as early as 1738. It also indicates that John Black, senior, purchased the 738 acres from Beverley the 31st May 1749 and some descendents continued to live there in 1801.
The court record also indicates that John Black (senior) in addition to our ancestor John (junior born ca. 1722) had at least two other sons, Samuel and William, who stayed in Virginia. The record also says that Beverley conveyed adjoining land to Thomas Stuart on 1st March 1749. It is not clear as to what was in dispute, but it probably was a small parcel or boundary since "fence" and "corner" are mentioned. Outcome of case was not disclosed. Sources for the above information: Manso Porter stated in his record s that the Black ancestors were of Scotch/Irish descent. This apparently was by word-of-mouth from generation to generation. Manso also learned "that they settled in or near Lexington, KY sometime in 1700."

This from an unknown source: "John Black (our ancestor), born ca. 1722 (son of John Black and Mary of Augusta County, Virginia who lived on South River), married Martha Patrick, lived Beverley Manor, Augusta County , Virginia until 1785, died 1797 in Bourbon County, Kentucky." (Do not know if the South River location and Beverley is one or two nearby locations. The statement says that John, Jr. lived there but does not say that he was born there). Ruth Lockett Burdge, a descendent of John and Ann Spears Black , writes: "Everything I have learned about the Black Family would indicate that they were Scotch-Irish. According to the Chalkley Volumes, it would seem that the Scotch-Irish descent is correct and that the family may have been in Pennsylvania before obtaining land in Beverley Manor, Augusta County , Virginia in 1741 or before."Madeline and James Segars and Mary Ann Patterson located the following information that was used for John and Martha Patrick Black. Some of the same material and other information came from Mrs. John Black of Madison, TN to Ruth Lockett Burdge, then to Wilinore Maddox of Fair mount, IL and then to Keith Black.

From "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia 1745 -1800" by Lyman Chalkley. Pages 537 and 538 of Volume I pertain to a court case in 1801 between the descendents of John Black and a Robert Stuart: File NO. 927, Stuart vs. Black. Robert Stuart complains that Samuel and James Black claim his land. Robert is son of Thomas Stuart, who received conveyance from Beverley, 1st March 1749. Beverley conveyed to John Black, ancestor of defendants, 30th May 1749 . William Black deposes, 16th November 1801, at house of John Black , in Montgomery County: Remembers the line (?) trees, when he was a small boy 20 years ago. Deponent is son to Samuel Black. John Black , aged 45 years, deposes, 16th November, 1801, at house of John Black in Montgomery County: Is son to Samuel Black. Deponent and Robert Stuart attended I. Cunningham's school. Receipt, viz: "July ye 15th, 1742. received of John Black, ye quit rent of 738 acres of land in Manor Beverley, due for four years last past, viz: A.D., 1738; A.D. ., 1739; A.D., 1740; A.D., 1741. per John Hart, D.S.O.C." Samuel McCutchen identifies Hart's handwriting above. Samuel and James Black ( son of Samuel Black) answer: Their land is part of 738 acres surveyed for John Preston, 19th and 23rd April, 1738, and sold to Samuel and James's grandfather, John Black, by Beverley, 31st May, 1749. William Black deposes, same time and place: That a considerable time ago his brother, Samuel Black, showed him the corner. Deponent is now about 62 years old, and has known the corner since he can remember, and it was a corner on the Manor line and his father's tract. Mr. Stuart died, 1788. John Black deposes, on premises, 19th December 1801: That in 1755 he helped repair the fence of his uncle, John Black, grandfather to defendant. Two years after Braddock's defeat he was taken on the muster roll, at the age of 16. (Furnished by Everett Keith Black)
