SECOND GENERATION

2. James Fish was born about 1804 in England.(3) (There is on record at www.familysearch.com: a James Fish son of Peter and Ann Harding Fish being christened on April 19, 1807 in Upton Pyne, Devon, England.) He emigrated about 1838 from England.(4) His naturalization papers say that he came to America in May 1847. This cannot be correct because his son James was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio on Nov. 6, 1838. I found on record were a James Fish immigrated from Great Britain to New York in 1838. Unfortunately, no other details were given. He was living in 1850 in Watertown Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(5) He was naturalized on Jul 1 1868 in Washington Co., Ohio.(6) He signed a will on Mar 28 1869 in Washington County Probate Court, Marietta, Ohio. (7) He died before Apr 22 1873 in Washington Co., Ohio.(8) He , according to federal census records, was a farmer in 1860 and 1870 in Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio. In 1870 a Jeanette Mudgridge is living with them, the 1880 census says she is their granddaughter - who's child is she?

He was married to Alice _____. (There is on record at www.familysearch.com: a James Fish marrying Alice Windsor Heap on June 30, 1829 in Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England. Alice Winsor Heap was the daughter of John Heap and Mary Marsland.) Alice _____ was born about 1812 in England. (3)(9) She signed a will on Aug 9 1886 in Washington Co., Ohio.(10) Here are some excerps from her will... "I bequeath to my Children, Timothy Fish, James Fish, John Fish, Roger Fish, Nancy Holmes, Isabell Harris, Ann Vaughn and Catherine Fish one dollar each and no more" "I give, devise and bequesath to my son Andrew Fish all the rest and residue of my estate, real, personal and mixed to have and to hold to himself and his heirs forever." "I nominate and appoint my said son, Andrew Fish to executor of this my last will and testament and I desire that he shall not be required to give bond as such." She died on Jan 22 1891 in Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio. James Fish and Alice _____ had the following children:

child3 i. Catherine Fish was born about 1836 in England. (5) She is listed as 14 years old in the 1850 census. She is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. She seems to disappear from all records until she is mentioned in her mother's will as Catherine Fish in 1886. She is listed as Catherine Swalley in her mother's probate records in 1891.
child4 ii. Timothy Fish was born on Jan 9 1837 in Lancashire, England. (11) He was enlisted in Co. H, 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on Dec 16 1861.(12) He was enlisted in Co. K, 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery on Aug 12 1863 in Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio. (11)(13) The Washington County Civil War Honor Roll records that he "Has had no serious disability at last account except deafness from artillery practice." He was listed missing in action in 1864. The honor roll states, "His parents have heard nothing from him for over a year - he is supposed to be dead." However, he is mentioned in his mother's will of 1880, perhaps she never gave up hope that he was still alive.
child+5 iii. James Fish.
child6 iv. Ann Fish was born about 1841 in Ohio.(5) She is listed as being 9 years old in the 1850 census. She is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. I found an Annie J. Fish who married Andrew J. Dodds of Athens county on Dec. 23, 1884, but cannot establish if it is her or not. She is listed as Ann Vaughn in her mothers will. According to James Fish of NC she married Andrew Dodds Vaughn.
child7 v. William Fish was born on Feb 19 1842 in Washington Co., Ohio. (11) He was enlisted in Company L, 1st Ohio Cavalry in Dec 1863 in Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(11) (14) "In no battles. Was taken sick with measles shortly after enlistment and died..." He died in Jan 1864 in Nashville, Tennessee.(11) (15) He was buried in Jan 1864 in Nashville, Tennessee.(11)
