Washington Co., Ohio. He died on Dec 8 1931 in Marietta, Ohio. The "Marietta
Times" of Tuesday, December 8, 1931 reported the following. "MAN KILLED
INSTANTLY IN AUTO WRECK - George Johnson, 56, Fearing Township farmer residing
near the Lynch Church, was instantly killed when an automobile in which he was
riding went over a 80 foot embankment on State Route 26 Tuesday morning. J.B.
Craig, brother-in-law of the victim, was driving their car and he was severley
crushed and bruised and was attended at Memorial Hospital. The accident occurred
a quarter of a mile below Sitka in the Cow Run neighborhood. - Johnson and
Craig were driving a Dodge car that had been converted into a school bus. They
were enroute to the home of Craig's mother where they expected to spend the day.
As they drove through the narrows below Sitka a Ford car driven by R. M. Kuhn
of Court Street, Marietta, with A. R. Day of Pike Street as a passenger overtook
them. - GOING AT GOOD SPEED - The cars were moving along at a good speed
and as they started down the hill toward Sitka, Kuhn undertook to pass the bus.
Kuhn's car got around the larger vehicle, then skidded in the loose gravel.
It went into the ditch on the left side of the road, swung back across the highway
and to avoid a collision, Craig pulled the heavy bus over toward the brink of
the bank above the Little Muskingum River. - The edge of the road caved under
the bus, the right front wheel dropped down and it rolled down the steep embankment.
Johnson was caught under the bus when it was wrecked against a tree and his
neck was broken. He is believed to have died instantly. - Craig was able to
extricate himself from the wreckage. he went to the assistance of his brother-in-law
but help was unavailing. - A crowd gathered quickly and when it was found that
Johnson was dead, Kuhn and Day turned their car around and brought Craig into
the city. They informed the sheriff of the accident, and an officer was sent
out to investigate. - GOES BACK TO SCENE - In spite of his own severe injuries,
Craig insisted on going back to the scene and accompanied a deputy sheriff.
He saw to it that Johnson's body was turned over to an undertaker. He then returned
to Marietta and was taken to the hospital for x-ray observation. He had painful
cuts and bruises on the face and head. His body was severely bruised and his
legs were deeply cut. It was believed that he had suffered broken ribs and there
was a possibility that a jaw bone was fractured. - Johnson's body was moved
to the Doudne & McClure mortuary and Coroner Fred Jackson of Beverly was
called to view the remains. - Kuhn and Day whose skidding car caused the fatal
accident, were enrout to the country to spend the day hunting rabbits. - Sheriff
Thorn and his men are assisting the coroner with an investigation. - George
