FIFTH GENERATION113. Edward Willis Johnson
was born on May 22 1865 in Marietta, Ohio.
(97) (Greeley Colorado Journal, May 4, 1952, by Carole Olson): "E.
W. Johnson, 87, Travels Steadily. It is somewhat surprising to learn that a
man, after retiring, has not sat back in leisure to watch the world go by, but
has literally gone by the world. Just such a person is Mr. E. W. Johnson, who
for fifty-one years has been a resident of Greeley. Raised in Ohio, Mr. Johnson
came to Colorado in 1892, living near Kersey for nine years before moving to
Greeley. He was in the farm implement business for nineteen years in the Odd
Fellows building where the Mutual Grocery is now located. After that he operated
a farm supply store across from the Post Office until his retirement seven years
ago. Now eighty-seven years young, Mr. Johnson has been traveling steadily
since 1923, beginning his journeys when he went through Yellowstone National
Park with his son. Since then he has traveled through forty-seven states, Alaska,
Hawaii, Mexico, and five provinces in Canada. His biggest and nicest trip so
far was a three months jaunt through Europe in 1927. He toured six continental
countries, three countries in North Africa, and England. Mr. Johnson took his
first airplane flight, from Paris to London, during that trip. His next flight
was in Alaska from Seward to Anchorage and back. It was near evening and on
the way back at sundown the plane flew through a pink cloud. Everything inside
and outside the plane was turned a beautiful pink in color. Another highlight
of the trip came when they flew through a circular rainbow. Mr. Johnson advises
any who are planning an Alaskan trip not to fly up. He says the inland boat
trip is a beautiful one, with the added features of an ocean voyage and mountain
scenery. The goal of his coming trip is to attend the World Convention of Christian
Churches in Melbourne, Australia. The trip is a conducted tour, the arrangements
being made by the Ready Travel Service in Kansas City. Rev. David M. Bryan
of the First Christian Church in Sedalia, Missouri is in charge of the tour,
which starts in July. Mr. Johnson will fly from Albuquerque to San Francisco
by Trans-World Airlines. From there on the tour will fly by BCPA, except for
side trips. The group will leave San Francisco on July 25 and fly to Honolulu,
which will be the first stop. The second pause is a brief one at Canton Island,
after which they will stop at Fiji Islands where they will sightsee and visit
the mission, Sidney, Australia is next, then Melbourne. There the group will
stop over for five days to attend the convention. They will be entertained
at private homes during their stay. After the convention the group will return
to Sidney and then proceed to the Holy Land, stopping at Singapore, Bangkok,
Calcutta, Bagdad, and Beirut. A tour of the Holy Land will be made by automobile,
winding up at Tel Aviv. Istanbul is the next stop, then London, New York City
and finally Albuquerque, making a complete round-the-world hop. They will arrive
in New York September 10." He died on Jul 13 1953 in Greeley, Colorado.
(97) Jan Botkin Therkildsen wrote me the following:
Pencil date (on obit) says July 13. Would be Greeley paper, 1953. "E.
W. Johnson, Aged Tourist, Dies, Aged 88. E. W. Johnson, 88, who flew around
the world last year, died at his home, 1309 Twelfth street, early Monday morning.
He had done most of his traveling after he was 60 years old, visited every state
in the union, Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico. His month and a half tour last July
from Albuquerque, took him to Hawaii, Canton Island, the Fiji Islands, Australia,
Asia, the Holy Land and London, then return by way of New York City. A retired
implement dealer, Mr. Johnson was born May 2, 1865 at Marietta, Ohio. He came
to this community 60 years ago. He and John C. Nixon went prospecting from Leadville
south to Arizona before Mr. Johnson settled on a farm at Kersey. He married
Miss Lutie G. Coil in 1894 and she died in 1908. A son, Linn, also preceded
his father in death. Mr. Johnson moved into town in 1900 and had since lived
here. He retired from the implement business eight years ago. He was a member
of Poudre Valley lodge, IOOF, for over 40 years, active in the Cosmopolita club,
served on the Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scout councils and was president of the
Lower Latham Ditch company for many years. He represented that group on the
Associated Ditch companies board. An active member or the First Christian church,
he was chairman of the board for many years and was made a life honorary trustee.
He taught in the church school for over 35 years. Mr. Johnson's first extensive
trip was taken to Paris in 1927, but most of his travels were in recent years.
