57. Bloomfield Johnson
(104)
(105)(10) was born on Jun 21
1833 in Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(1)
(106) He died on Jan 27 1906 in
Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(107)
He was buried in Warren Chapel Cemetery, Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.
(108) He was enlisted in Company K, 148th
Ohio Volunteer Infantry.(109)
The Friday, March 26, 1886 edition of the Marietta Semi-Weekly Register carried
this story, " Bloomfield Johnson of Warren Tp., was lodged in jail Wednesday,
charged with assault with the intent to rape. The person upon whom the crime
is said to have been committed is his fifteen year old daughter." A follow-up
report on Tuesday, March 30, 1886 reads as follows, "Bloomfield Johnson,
who was lodged in jail charged with assault with the intent to rape, had a hearing
on habeas corpus, before Judge Cutter, and was held. He had another hearing
before Judge Sibley, who was to have sent his decision from Athens last night."
The April 15, 1886 edition of the Marietta Times reported, "Bloomfield
Johnson who was to have a hearing before Mayor Ridgeway last week waived the
examination and was taken back to jail." MY NOTE: This incident occurred
a few days after his mother had passed away - I wonder if he may have been intoxicated,
this doesn't excuse his actions, but it may explain his lack of self restraint..
He was married to Lucinda VanValey (daughter of Solomon VanValey
and Elizabeth Hudson) on Sep 13 1859 in Washington Co., Ohio.
(110) William Waterman relates the following
information, "In August of 1883, Lucinda filed for divorce from Bloomfield
in Washington County, Ohio on grounds of cruelty. In November of 1883, she signed
papers stating that she wished to dismiss the complaint. Case was dismissed
the November term for lack of prosecution. They evidently obtained a divorce
sometime, because they remarried June 13, 1891 in Washington Co., Ohio."
Lucinda VanValey was born on Sep 23 1841 in Washington Co., Ohio.
She died on May 2 1914 in Tunnel, Washington Co., Ohio.
(111) Cause of death is listed as Colitis on death certificate. She
was buried in Warren Chapel Cemetery, Warren Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.

death was 18 years and 11 months. She died on Sep 28 1884 in Warren Twp., Washington
Co., Ohio.(114) She was burned to death
according to her death record. The Marietta Weekly Leader of Sept 30, 1884 gave
the following report, "A Horrible Accident - Miss Mary Johnson, eldest
daughter of Bloomfield Johnson, Esq., of Warren township, who lives near Ropers,
met with a terrible accident, Friday evening, which at the present writing is
likely to result in death. She and her brother were in the kitchen, and were
the only persons at the house. She was preparing the supper, and in an attempting
to reach over the stove to seize a kettle, the flames caught her apron with which
she protected her hand, and in a minute her clothing were in a blaze. - Her
brother, who we understand is not very bright, and from whom the family derived
the account of the accident, did all that his feeble mind prompted him to do.
He endeavored to smother the flames with a blanket, his sister rolling over
and over on the floor. Her clothes were completely burned off of her, and the
floor blackened by the flames. Medical assistance was called in, and everything
is done to alleviate her horrible sufferings, but it is improbable, our informant
says, that she will recover." The Marietta Times of October 2, 1884 gave
this account, "Miss Mary Johnson, daughter of Bloomfield Johnson of Warren,
was very seriously burned last Friday evening, by her clothes taking fire while
she was engaged in cooking supper."
