J. Johnson , father of Mrs. Fred Roush, and Mrs. Slater Nichols of Beverly who
made his home in Beverly with his daughters following the death of his wife,
departed earth at 3 p.m. on Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kathryn
Bowen of the Oak Grove neighborhood, Marietta. He suffered a stroke ten days
previously after which there was no change for the better. He had been at the
Bowen home since August, 1940. - Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Jacob and
Catherine VanValey Johnson and was born in Barlow township on November 15, 1864.
Mrs. Elizabeth Martin Johnson to whom he was married 56 years ago, died on May
24, 1940. - Four sons and six daughters survive: Dayton Johnson of Whipple,
Herman, Harley and Kenneth Johnson of Marietta, Mrs. Bertha Fish of Utica, Mrs.
Fred Roush and Mrs. Slater Nichols of Beverly, Mrs. Blanche Jellison, Mrs. Kathryn
Bowen and Mrs. Chester Robinson of Marietta. August G. Johnson, Lonnie Johnson,
Mrs. Ida Hawkins and Mrs. Lydia Martin of Beverly, Charles Johnson of Watertown,
Mrs. Vesta Sciance of Zanesville, Arthur Johnson of Vincent, and Mrs. Etta Washburn
of Florida, are surviving brothers and sisters. - Brief rites were held at
the Bowen home in Oak Grove at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday with further services at Warren
Chapel Methodist church at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Methodist
church. Pallbearers were the grandsons: Lyell Roush, Clyde Flannery, Clifford
Nichols and Roy Johnson of Beverly and Ralph Bowen of Marietta, and Carl Johnson,
of Williamstown, W. Va."
He was married to Elizabeth Ann Martin
(daughter of Enoch G. Martin and Margaret
Gregory) on Nov 17 1885 in Marietta, Ohio. "Perley farmed, worked a sawmill,
and did custom threshing for a living." - Dorothy Johnson Biehl

EXPIRES - Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Johnson, aged 78 years, wife of Perley J. Johnson,
departed earth at the home of her Daughter, Mrs. Fred Roush at 3:10 p.m. on
Friday. She had suffered a cerebral hemmorahage on May 12. Mrs. Johnson was
the last member of a family of five brothers and three sisters, sons and daughters
of the late Enoch and Margaret Gregory Martin. She was born in Green County,
Pennsylvania, on January 19, 1862, and when two years of age came with her parents
to Barlow township where she passed her girlhood. She was married to Perley
J. Johnson on November 17, 1885. They lived on a farm in Warren Township, Fleming
route, for 47 years, and were held in high esteem in their home community. They
left their farm December 23, 1939, coming to Beverly to make their home with
their daughter, Mrs. Roush. - Surviving with the husband are the sons and daughters,
Dayton Johnson of Whipple, Herman Johnson, Harley Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Mrs.
Kathryn Bowen, Mrs. Verna Robinson and Mrs. Blanche Jellison of Marietta; Mrs.
Chaddie Roush and Mrs. Ethel Nichols of Beverly; 35 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren,
nephews, nieces and other relatives. A daughter, Mrs. Bernice Roberts passed
from earth June 23, 1939 and Lydia Marie, a daughter, expired in infancy. -
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Warren Methodist Chapel. - Funeral rites were
held at the Roush home at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday and at Warren Chapel, Tunnel, at
3 p.m. Officiating clergymen were Rev. Harry Yost, Rev. John Thompson, and W.
W. McClure. - Hymn selections were by the Allen Family. Interment was in Warren
Chapel cemetery. C. H. Mindling, funeral director. Pallbearers were Leroy Johnson,
Clifford Nichols, Clyde Flannery, Carl Johnson, Lyell Roush and Ralph Bowen.
Flower girls were granddaughters Norma Jean Bowen, Kathryn Woods, Lena Johnson
and Pearl Bole."
