104. Orval Dewaine Ritchie
was born on Jun 14 1927.(115) He
died on Nov 23 1989.(115) Dewain Ritchie
says he passed away on Nov. 22 1988. He was buried in Luling, Texas. "Dad
worked in the oil fields for about 33 yrs and was a truck driver for many years
after that until he was forced to retire due to his health. Dad was a good man
and father. He taught us respect for our parents as well as others. He ruled
the house with a strong hand and demanded respect. That may sound a bit strong
but I believe that I'm the better man for it. When we were younger dad spent
a lot of time hunting and fishing to keep the freezer full. With that many kids
it was hard to keep the cupboards full. Dad loved to hunt and fish, he had a
pack of the best coon dogs you've ever laid eyes on. I believe his favorite
was a red bone hound he named Paladon. As much as he liked to fish, Dad couldn't
swim a lick. I saw him jump into Plum Creek to pull out a yellow catfish that
weighed about 35 - 40lbs. He was in up to his neck, so to speak, but he got
his fish. I was quite surprised to see him jump into the water to go after that
fish, it has brought me many laughs through the years as it is one of my favorite
memories of him. We would set out lines in early spring and run our lines every
day until the summer was over and it started getting cold. Dad taught us an
awful lot about fishing and hunting and ways to "live off the land".
