St. Clair (Sinclair) Ritchie (3) was born on Dec 7 1840 in Washington Co., Ohio (probably Newport Twp.).(17) He was enlisted in Company C 1st West Virginia Light Artillery (Buell's Battery) as a Private on Sep 1 1861.(18) He was discharged on Jun 28 1865.(19) He re-enlisted as a veteran on June 28, 1865 according to William's History of Washington County.. He resided at Yankeeburg, a farmer, in 1898 in Newport Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(20) He died on Nov 10 1921 in Newport Twp., Washington Co., Ohio.(21) He was buried on Nov 12 1921 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Marietta, Ohio. (17) His name appears as Sinclair in many records, but St. Clair is more prevalent. His military records list his name as St. Clair Ritchey. I found the following article in the Thursday, August 6, 1885 edition of the Marietta Times; "Sinclair Ritchie, of Newport, was badly hurt last Thursday afternoon. He was driving out Wayne street along side of the C. &. M. switch, when the yard engine came along. His horse reared at the engine, but Ritchie succeeded in controlling him, when the engineer Joseph Malon, opened the stop cocks of the cylinders scaring him again. The lines broke and Ritchie jumped from the wagon and broke his left leg at the ankle joint. The fracture is a bad one and will make Ritchie a cripple for life. It is said by those who witnessed the accident that the conduct of the engineer in opening up the cylinder cocks, appeared to be done purposely to scare the horse. Is such be the case he should be severely dealt with."
