1. Peter HANRATTY(1) Photo was born in 1796 in Fork Hill,Co. Armagh, Ireland. Calumet Island census for 1861 gives his age, next birthday, as 70 years. He died on 8 Jul 1876 in Calumet Island,Quebec. Said to have arrived in Canada in 1842. Moved to Calumet Island. Lot 23, Range 1

Burial Certificate from Ste. Anne's Parish, Calumet Island shows a Mary Hanratty buried Jan.12,1886 at the age of 101. She was the wife of Cornelius McNally. She would have been born in 1785 so she may have been Peter's sister and arrived with him.

Note on Hanrattys: (F.J. Thomas)
Nearly all the Hanrattys lived within a 30 mile radius of Crossmaglen near Forkhill. After the Anglo-Norman invasion of the 12th century they moved from their lands north of Louth to settle in Castleblagney, near Lake Muckno. This is the main area where they live to-day. The Hanrattys were the managers of the Catholic church lands from the 11th century to the 16th century until the Catholic church lands were confiscated by Elizabeth the First and by Cromwell. An Abbey was founded at Lake Muckno about the 7th century and the saint who set it up was from the Hanratty family, St.Maeldoid, the only Hanratty I know of who set such high standards. In the 16th century a Hanratty who was a priest at Lake Muckno had to resign because he slayed a cleric!

The country area where the Hanrattys lived is very beautiful, to-day rich farm lands in border country between the North and South of Ireland. I saw many IRA posters and found IRA graves in the area of Crossmaglen and Castleblagney. Forkhill is a big IRA center with a large Army presence to control the border.

He was married to Mary O'HARE in 1830. Mary O'HARE was born in 1816 in Ireland. Monica Goblinsky of Ste. Catherines Ont. writes" Philba O'Hare owned the Red Stag Tavern on Belfast Road in Ireland. He had 2 daughters. One married a Hanratty, they emigrated to Canada, went up the Ottawa River to Calumet Island and built a small settler cabin. They were joined by the other sister who married a Cunningham and had 4 children. This prperty became the farm of Theo Turgeon, whose descendants still own it." Dated Feb. 1999. She died in 1896. Married at age 15!
