Notes for Emma Kathleen Skinner:

Mom's mother died when she was 5 and grandpa took her to Dick and Emma Flunker's house and left her and told them he would be back to get her when school started. He never came back. She was within walking distance of her Grandpa and Ma Skinner ( Who was raising the rest of the kids). When she would go there they would fight and tell her to go home she didn't live there. She lived with Grandma and Dick until she married. Grandpa Skinner died and the rest of the kids were on Thier own.
Daughter Jeanie's version of the shooting
I remember the day my dad was shot. It is one of my first memories. I woke up to a gray, dingy morning, and it was as if a cloud lingered in my bedroom. I heard the sounds of angry voices coming from the rest of the house. I went into the next room and it was as if I was inviable, and they talked loud and talking about Mom. I don't remember what they said just that I should take up for Mom, but I didn't know why.
I was told or remember stories that Mom came home, A car was sitting behind her car running with his lights out. She got in her car and drove home with him in pursuit. She ran in the house when she got home. She went into the bedroom where Papa was lying in bed. They were talking while Mom got undressed. Mom suddenly notice a man looking in the window. Dad ran outside and he chased the man and tackled him football style. The man turned and put a gun against Dad's chin and fired. The bullet went though his chin, into his neck an out his shoulder. He woke up with something over his head: so he uncovered his head and asked them to call an ambulance. The policeman leaned down covering him back up. Our neighbor Mr. Miller called the ambulance. He spent 6 months in the hospital and had the nerves of a new born put in his shoulder. This was done at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis it was experimental so it only Cost $500.00.
Dad's family blamed Mom and were going to take us kids and tried to keep her from the hospital.
That happen in 1944 and in 1988 a knot came up on Dad's neck they operated and saw where 44 years earlier that bullet had gone thru the main artery of his neck clearly it had enter and exit with out him bleeding to death as he should have, God wasn't done with him yet.
