Notes for Peleg Rogers:
Four of five sons of Peleg: Thomas, Job, James and Peleg, identified by association in Duplin Co NC area. On 15 November 1768, Sampson Co SC, Deed Book 4, page 155, John Rogers of Craven County,SC
gave power of attorney to his brother Thomas Rogers of Black River. The power of attorney was witnessed by Peleg Rogers. Source: Research Data on Peleg Rogers, compiled by David H. Robertson of Snellville, GA, 18 Sep 1997.
June 20, 1729:      Peleg Rogers of Westerly, Rhode Island (card waiver) deeded 167 acres of land to John Tift of South Kinston, Rhode Island.

Peleg Rogers settled in Duplin County, NC, which was cut from New Hanover County. Peleg reared a large family that settled in other counties of North Carolina, such as: New Hanover, Sampson, Wake, Edgecomb, and others.

1734      Robert Warren deeded 300 acres on Horse Swamp in Bertie County, NC to Peleg Rogers.

1745      Peleg Rogers was patented (granted) 400 acres on Town Creek, Edgecomb County, NC

January 31, 1759      Peleg Rogers wrote his "father" in Westerly, Rhode Island. He mentioned that he lived near his brother, Job; that Job had a wife and two sons; that his wife, Isabell, had died April 25, 1754; and that he had five sons and three daughters, of which four of his children were married. (See letter dated October 7, 1985 from Bob McCrary to David H. Robertson citing Elizabeth F. McKoy, "Early New Hanover Records"; and McKoy Collection, University of North Carolina, Capel Hill, NC.

The letter Peleg wrote and other documents connected with it provide an enormous amount of information and clues on the Rogers Family. Although the salutation in the letter is "Honored Father", it was addressed to THOMAS BRAND. Therefore, the letter may actually be to the father-in-law of Peleg rather than to his natural father. Much of the information is connected to a lawsuit entitled Saunders v. Baker litigated in Newport, Rhode Island and involves a lot of references to the Brand family. If Isabell Rogers predeceased her father Thomas Brand, then the estate records of Thomas Brand, if extant, could conclusively prove the children of Peleg Rogers. The fact that Job is mentioned as having two sons tends to identify Job who died in Wake County, NC as the brother of Peleg. Four of the five sons of Peleg, to-wit, Thomas, Job, James, and Peleg, are identified by association in the Duplin County, NC area. The fifth son is probably either Samuel, of Duplin County, NC, or Benjamin of Bertie County, NC. Benjamin is the better bet at this time as Isabell Rogers had a brother Benjamin Brand (named for their Uncle Benjamin Babcock). Furthermore, upon the death of Benjamin Rogers in Bertie County, NC,his son Reuben settled very near Thomas Rogers (his uncle?) in New Hanover County, NC.

NOTE: The references to Peleg and Job Rogers in Johnston County, NC at first are very puzzling as both appear to be living in adjacent Duplin County, NC before and after the deed references. This is explained by the fact that Job of Duplin County is the son of Peleg of Duplin County and Peleg of Johnston County is the son of Job of Johnston/Wake County.

The Pence Family Name & The First Pences to Come To America

The name Pence, Penz, and Pentz Means "One who comes from Pentz, Germany". The names are believed to have been derived from the surname Bentz.

The first Pences to arrive in America may have been either Johann Jacob Bentz, born in 1711, or Johann George Bentz, born in 1719 of Pfalz, Iggelheim, Germany. Valentine Pens arrived in Philadelphia From Palatinate area of Germany on Sept. 20, 1738. Jacob, Johann Ludwig, and Heinrich Bentz arrived in Philadelphia on Sept 15, 1749 aboard the ship "Phoenix" from Rotterdam. Adam Pence arrived in America on the ship "Neptune" on Oct. 4, 1752.

These early Pences fled Germany to escape prosecution for their "Lutheran" beliefs and to flee from the frequent wars on the continent which had decemoled the population of Europe over a hundred years.
