BUR RIED NOV 20 1272 AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY, WESTMINSTER,MIDDLESEX,ENGLAND.
MARRIED ELEONORE (LEONOR) COUNTESS OF PROVENCE OUEEN OF ENGLAND
Ruled 1216-1272; was only 9 when he succeeded his father. The country was well governed until he took over control himself in 1227. He alienated his subjects, just as his father had done, by raising taxes to spend on useless wars. His court was dominated by Frenchmen, many related to his wife, who grabbed the most profitable jobs for themselves. Opposition was organized by the brother-in-law- Simon de Montfort, who took Henry prisoner in 1264 and forced him to summon a parliament composed of representatives from every shire. De Montfort was killed in 1265, but the idea survived. Henry's finest legacy was in rebuilding Westminster Abbey and remodeling several cathedrals. He also gave England a wealth of artists and craftsmen, whom he made very fashionable. He died of natural causes at the age of 65. He was not really made for the role of a monarch and would have been better suited to the role of a country squire by his passionate interest in his estate.
