Notes for A
LFRED "THE GREAT" KING OF ENGLAND:
Reigned from 871-899 and was one of the outstanding figures of English history. Born the youngest of 5 sons of King Ethelwulf. Alfred became King on the death of his brother, Ethelred, during the invasion of the Danes. He made peace with the Danes but they continued their marauding expeditions 5 years later, and by 878 they were successful almost everywhere. About Easter 878 Alfred began assembling an army. In the middle of the year he defeated the Danes and captured their stronghold. If it had not been for this victory Christianity would probably have been wiped out in England. During the following 14 years he was able to devote himself to the internal affairs of the kingdom. By 866 he had captured London and was recognized as the King of England. The Danes invaded again in 893 and warfare continued for 4 years, but eventually were forced to withdraw. He was the only ruler to be successful in resisting Danish invasions, made his kingdom the rallying point for all Saxons and laid the foundation for the unification of England. He rebuilt London which had been partly destroyed by the Danes. He was a patron of learning and did much for the education of his people. He began a court school and invited British and foreign scholars, notably the Welch monk, Asser and Irish-born philosopher and theologian John Scotus Erigena, to come there. He translated such works as The Consolation of Philosophy by the Roman statesman and philosopher Doethlus, the History of the World by the Spanish priest Paulus Orosius, and Pastoral Care by Pope Gregory I. Alfred's laws were the first that made no distinction between the English and the Welsh. He died at the age of 51, but was not a true King if England as he ruled less then 1/2 the island.
