COPY OF LTR WRITTEN BY MARY ANN FRAZIER MAYER IN 1900

Mary Ann Frazier Mayer( bca. 1819 d after 1880) m Jacob Mayer moved to Williamson Co. IL.
in 1864. He died that year, as did their second daughter, who was nineteen years of age and had been married only five months. Mary and her husband had nine children all living to maturity. In the following letter which she wrote to her brother, Franklin Tennessee Frazier Sr. in Greene county, Mo. on 4-1-1880, she speaks poignantly of her hardships after the death of her husband.

note: spelling and grammer are as she wrote them.

"My dear brother, I have seated myself to write you a letter but I have got so nervis I can hardly write so a body can read it John s famely are all well I am as well as common for I am hardly ever well. I am vary much aflicted with rheumatism and then I am going on sixety one years now and can riot expect to feel like I once did brother its bin so long since I seen you or even hird from that I hardly no how to address you.
Well brother you rote a history of your famely which I was glad to get for I did not no no more about them if I did not have such a brother in the world that seams vary unnatural no futher apart than we have bin we was not raised to care so little for one another and I do hope we can do better in the future well brother I have nine children I raised them all to be grown we lost our second daughter in her ninteenth year. She had been married five months that was in sixety four the year we moved to this state her father died on the 18 and her on the 22nd it is unnecessary my brother for me to try to tell the heartbreak and trobel I seen at that time for words could not express it I was left in a strange land with five little children to raise witheout a father to help raise them I had never bin without a home before but I had had a family it seamed to me that thare was not a gleam of light to cast my eyes upon that the closet of adversity had obscured everything It is not any satisfaction to me but I soon found that it would not do to give up I also found that thars more respnsibity reasting on me than ever before so I exerted evary energy of mind and body to try to raise my children industrous and honest wich thare father allways tried to do you no my brother that I had a kind husband but and all wise providence saw fit to take him from me and I had to be resined to his will but never, however, have I done missing him though he has bin ded sixteen years yet his memory is dear to my heart but thank god my children has never done anything to stain his sleeping dust I have got four sons theay are all respectible honest men theay are all maried and making a good living for thare famelys theay have not wealthe to boast on but theay have got enough to live on theay have made it buy thre investing (_?_) in what I call an honest living.

Well brother you note a goodeale about your losses in the war times well I have no doubt but that you told the truthe but then I had nothing to do with bringing on the cruel war though we had to suffer from the party that you boast of being one of thare number as much in prpportion to what we had as you did for if we had but little it was worthe as much to us as if we owned more theay taken our meet and bread and not only taken it from me and my little children but come in to my house withe armed force and made me cook for them tell I was vary near ded theay left me no cock to crow nor dog to bark it is tru they not free no negroes for us for thank god we had none that is one sin i will never have to report for theay are free and i did not free them but I am glad that theay are free for I believe it is write for I think that slavry has bin a curse to the United States you said that you had bin boarn in the south educated so was I my brother but that is no reason that I would stick to that that was not write if the southe brought a calamity on themselves who is to blame for it brother if you had not of________?_____________ thing to lite this question would never bin named for I think so as uncalled for so I want you to take what I have said jest like you expected me to take what you said thare is a little Frazier about me yet an I think I can take a hint I did not expect when I grasped the letter that I was so glad to get that the contents of the letter would be on the war more than anything else now brother Frank you need not get sassey(?) about it you comenced it well that is jest enough on the subject I want you to write to me where brother William is and where his address is so I can write to him also I want to no what was the mater with brother Lafayette where Amanda Bonds children is she had by Mat Aron and how many children she had by her last husband I want you to tell your Sam that letter That he promist to write to his old Aunt now brother I want you to come and see me I no you could come if you wanted to see me as bad as I want to see you you are able to come and you are a man and can travile without a protecter and I cant and if you come and see me I want you to send me your picture by letter my children express a grate desire to see thare Uncle Frank brother be shore and sent it to me if I had the meanes and could travile like a man I would see my three brothers and sistr before twlve months but I cant but brother I no you are able to get on the cares and cone and see me and I shurly think you will bring my uninteresting letter to a clase my Dear brother I now bid you and affectionate farewell may the sweetest anticpation that you now enjoy be fuly realized nd when you are done with the (__?___) of life may hapiness and properity atend you where ever you go and when your declining son shall sink below the horrizon of this world may it rise brightly and shine brillintly in a world of imortality.

No More but remain

your affectionate sister

tele deathe. Mary A. Mayer

Mary was reared in early days of Henry Co., Tennessee. At that time opportunities for education, particularly for girls, must have been very limited, so the letter is even more a treasure. Although it is almost one hundred years old and some of the words are no longer legible, the penmanship is very good. Especially of interest are her comments about the Civil War when her family sided with the North while her brother, Franklin Tennessee Frazier Sr. allied himself with the cause of the South, for which he suffered greatly. His eldest son lost his life in the war, and he had to abandon his property in Missouri.

In 1880, according to the Willimson Co., IL. censes, Mary Mayer was living with the John White, age 27, family(his wife Drucilla and sons Edgar and Elroy) a farmer in Union Precinet. Drucilla age 22 was probably Marys daughter. Also listed on this censes are the family of Julian Mayer age 38 (his wife Frances 38 children Susan A., Sarah, Thomas, William, Melvin) and the family of John Mayer 37( his wife Sarah 36 sons James , Jacob, Aderson, and Lincoln). Julian and John may have been sons of Mary Mayer.

Professor D. R. Frazier has the letter from which this was copied. His Sharing it is very much appreciated.
