6. PHILLIP SOUTHWELL3 HIERS (KEZIAH "KIZZIE" ANN2 HUNTER, WILLIAM SR.1) was born April 29, 1829 in Barnwell District, South Carolina, GA, and died February 10, 1922 in Florida. He married (1) MARY GEIGER. He married (2) SARAH SMITH September 14, 1854 in Hamilton County, Florida, daughter of JOB SMITH and NANCY PATE.

Notes for PHILLIP SOUTHWELL HIERS:
Served in the Confederate army for three years. Enlisted as a volunteer 5-3-1862 at Old Columbus, Florida in Co. H 8th Florida Infantry regiment.He was elected sargeant. His brigade was known as Finnigan's Brigade. was in the battle of Gettysburg and his entire comapny was captured near Birdville, VA 4-16-1865. They spent a short time at a prisoner of war camp at Norfolk , VA being paroled a short time later cuz war over. He aquired 800 acres of land on the public road from Jennings, Hamilton County, Fl to Lake PArk, GA

James Robert Durst born, Edgefield, Sc 7-31-1842. Died 3-1-1923. Married Martha Ann Catherine hiers 8-24-1865. MArtha was born in Colquitt County near Hempstead on 4-5-1847, and she died 3-9-1923. Both are buried Friensip Church Buried in Friendship Cemetery in Hahira, Lowndes County,GA.
James was mustered into serivice 9-7-1861. He was attached to COM. C 61st Georgia Regiment. According to the National archives records, he enlisted at Quitman, GA. He was wounded at Sharpsburg (Antietam) 9-17-1862. Records show he was left "behind enemy lines" of battle of Monocacy, MD. He was captured 7-10-1864 and sent to Ft. McHenry, MD on 8-19-1864. From there he was transferred to Point Lookout, MD 10-30-1864.
Rolls bear the following endorsement: Received 15 Nov 1864, at Eveus Point Savannah River, from John E. Mulford, Lt. Col. and asst. , for exchange, 30230 paroled confederate prisoners of war on within rolls. Including 4 citizens, 4 surgeons, and 974 officers. W. W> Hatch, Asst Agt. of Exchange.
James Durst appears in a list of POW's surrendered to Brig. General E.M. McCook by Major Sam Jones, CSA at Tallahassee, FL. on May 10, 1865. Paroled at Thomasville, GA May 25, 1865.
Private CSA 61st Regiment Georgia Infantry Company C Res. truit Cross of Honor. Came to Georgia in 1858. Moved to Lowndesin 1915. From Book Confederate Soldiers of Colquitt County, Odum and Gammage

Wiregrass rifles organized in September 1861, and was made up from men living in the western portion of Brooks and the Eastern Portion of Thomas County, with some from Colquitt County. It was organized in June 1861 at Pavo, then called MacDonald and was inducted into service 9-7-1862 and given the Nane Wiregrass Rifles. It wasa later changed to Brooks County Rifles. After arrival in Savannah, it was attached to the 61st Gerogia Volunteer Regiment and designated comany C.e regiment participated in the battles of the army of northen Virginia; was Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Fredricksburg, and other battles, and lost heavily during the four years of the war. The history of this regiment was written about 1902 by G.V. Nichols of Wayne County., who served in another comapny of the same regiment and the information given by him has been checked with the official roll in the pension department, Atlanta.

Notes for MARTHA HIERS:
lived in Hamilton County, Florida unbtil then death of her husband. Returned to Brooks county, Ga with her children. In March 1880, she joined by experinence Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. She was dismissed by letter March 1897.
Under the Act of 1910, she applied for a pension. Records indicated she had been a continuing resident of Georgia for 69 years, and that neither she nor her husband had ever owned land. The application was sworn 8-1-1910 in Lowndes County, GA.

Buried Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in unmarked grave.Her parents are buried there in unmarked graves , also.


Notes for WILLIAM S. WESTBERRY:
3-4-1862 enlisted Whitesville, Echols County, Georgia as private in Georgia ????Infantry. HGe was transferred to Company C, 49th RegimentGeorgia Infantry, 5-12-1862. Appears on receipt roll for clothing at a hoispital in Guyton, Ga 9-6-1863. He was wounded a missionary ridge, TN 11-25-1863. Admitted to St. MAry's Hospital, LA Grqange , GA 6-25-1864. and later transferred to Oliver Hospital 7-5-1864. In 10-1864, he was sent home to Hamilton County, FL. on 60 fday furlough.
