Lived in the Tallaakas district, in the part of Lowndes County that formed Brooks in 1857. He was a Planter, Lawyer, Mason, Methodist, Democrat. and a Representative in the Georgia Assembly from Colquitt County in 1911-1912. He was a corporal in Company L, 3rd Regiment of Volunteers in the Spanish American War and was released on a "Certificate of Disability" for discharge. . His John, John Irvin was also in the War.

He read law in the books of Henry Gray Turner in Quitman. He practiced law in Brooks and surrounding counties. ,and he joined John C. Chason in a law partnership after moving about 1910.He was admitted to the bar in 1889.
